Rolls-Royce is going to supply methanol engines for yachts, the hull of the new Argo 54 is launched and the development of a boat with a hull made of flax fibers is the most interesting from the world of yachting in this news digest!
Rolls-Royce announces partnership between Lürssen and Sanlorenzo
This is stated in a press release from Rolls-Royce. Recall that Rolls-Royce is engaged in the production of methanol engines mtu. Now, these engines will also be on the superyachts of the Lürssen and Sanlorenzo shipyards by 2026.
Both shipyards will receive exclusive rights to use methanol systems manufactured by Rolls-Royce. The peculiarity of the deal is that methanol engines will be installed on yachts for the first time. Under the terms of the contract, the Sanlorenzo shipyard will be able to install these engines on all of its yachts up to 75 meters in length. As for Lürssen, the shipyard got "heavy artillery" - engines for boats over 75 meters.
Denise Kurtulus, Vice President of Rolls-Royce Global Marine, says: “We are working to bring the first methanol engine to two different segments of the yachting market. One with Sanlorenzo for small yachts and one with Lürssen for superyachts.”
Hull of Argo 54 launched in the Netherlands
In the Netherlands, the shipyard Jacht-en Scheepswerf Gouwerok BV in Aalsmeer launched the hull of a 54-meter boat called Argo 54. Prior to this, the project was called “Hull 549”. The hull went to be fine-tuned by the Greek shipyard Omikron Yachts. Literally now the base of the boat is on its way to Athens.
The exterior and design of the yacht was developed by designer Rob Doyle. Specifically, on this project, he worked together with the Spanish designer Juan Kuyumjian. The Greeks will be engaged in interior design. Their task will be to bring to mind the idea of a single-deck boat. The main feature is a large amount of space for recreation and entertainment. The width of the yacht is 9.6 meters.
Among other interesting things, it is worth highlighting the aluminum case. The yacht should be light and strong due to the use of aluminum structures. There will also be one mainmast on the boat. According to the shipyard, the boat will be capable of carrying sailing equipment with a total area of about 3500 m2. The boat will receive its masts already in Greece. They were created by the New Zealand company Southern Spars.
In addition, the draft of the Argo 54 is about 9.5 meters with the keel down. If the keel is raised, the draft will be 3.7 meters. By the way, Argo 54 officially entered the top ten largest single-mast yachts on the planet.
Development of a new class 40 boat with a linen hull
The most interesting thing is that the prototype of such a boat has already shown itself. In June 2022, such a yacht – called Crosscall – won the Class 40 World Championship. Linen fibers help create more “friendly” materials, biodegradable components that are also stronger and more durable.
Crosscall is the prototype for the new Lift V2 project by Mark Lombard, one of the leading naval architects in the field, and GLC. The Class 40 is one of the most competitive fleets in yacht racing. Distinctive features of such yachts: lightness, strength, structural rigidity and durability even under extreme use.
Crosscall owner Aurélien Ducroze was keen to use as many flax fibers as possible in the construction of the yacht. Alas, the certification service insisted that both linen fibers and classic materials be equally divided.
Crosscall has an interesting cockpit, which actually does not have the classic structure and supports. The cockpit is made of hybrid bi-axial fabrics, which consist of flax fibers on the 50%. Interesting was the way the hull was made. The body of the Crosscall was molded and cast in one solid, large piece. A deck with a fiber hybrid cockpit, in turn, another large one-piece piece.
Right now, GLC is working on the second Lift V2 Class40 body, but with a higher content of flax fibers.
