A new boat from Southern Wind is launched, a yachtsman collaborates with an artist, and an ocean racer sets a record on land - latest yachting news!
Nyumba by Southern Wind is deflated!
South African shipyard Southern Wind has launched the fourth side of the SW96 range. This model was named Nyumba. Interestingly, in translation from Swahili, this word means “house”.

The boat itself was no less entertaining - it is the first boat in the Southern Wind line to use a hybrid propulsion system. According to the shipyard, the yacht was created for a certain "serious and experienced yachtsman with ambitions to participate in regattas." Among other things, an unnamed yachtsman has plans for a solo circumnavigation of the world.

Farr Yacht Design studio pored over the design of the boat, and Nauta Design tried on the interior. The hull and deck were made of a composite material - the so-called. "sandwich". The boat has a lifting keel, double rudders and carbon rigging.

The hybrid plant was developed in collaboration with BAE Systems. Of the interesting things in the system is the patented HybridGen system. Thanks to it, there is the possibility of zero emission of all substances harmful to the surrounding ecosystem.
Right now Nyumba is preparing for sea trials in Cape Town, South Africa. The delivery of the yacht should take place in October 2023.
Art and yachting at the Route de Rhum regatta
For those who are not in the know, we remind you that Route de Rhum is one of the most exciting transatlantic races. Single yachtsmen participate in it. Boats of various classes take part in the regatta. The entire route stretches for 3542 nautical miles from Malo in Brittany (France) to the island of Guadeloupe (Caribbean).

This year, 138 yachtsmen participated in the regatta, but not all of them reached the finish line due to difficult weather conditions. The hero of this section - Konrad Kolman - was one of those who were lucky enough to cross the finish line. His journey took 13 days, 20 hours and 23 minutes. Konrad finished 18th out of 34 finishers in the Imoca class.
But Colman did not just take part in the regatta. He had another mission, absolutely far away for many. Conrad carried on board the boat silk panels by the artist James Perkins.

James is famous for his abstract work, as well as the connection of his creations with nature. His work has been covered by major publications such as The Wall Street Journal, CNBC, ABC and FOX Business. One of his main projects is “post-totem structures”, as James himself calls them. The bottom line is that for a certain time, an object made of wood or silk, made by James, is placed in conditions of wild (or not so) nature. After a while, when mother nature left her mark on the subject, the creation is “extracted from the vast expanses of nature” and exhibited in the gallery.

The new "totems" that went through the whole regatta became something new in James' collection. He says: “I wanted to capture the power of the ocean, but in a rather unusual way. It was not enough to simply place totems along the coast. It was necessary that the canvases go through the same thing that Conrad went through. That is, through the storms - and rushed to a long-term goal.
Konrad Colman is only too happy to help: “It's a pleasure for me to be a custodian and a kind of “choreographer” of a future work of art. Even just watching the literally every minute transformation of silk is already something incredible…”
The yachtsman and the artist plan to continue cooperation in the near future!
How an experienced yacht racer conquered the desert
Sailing are not only boats, but also cars. But there is one caveat ... It lies in the fact that one of them was driven by an experienced yachtsman Glenn Ashby. What was he doing behind the wheel of a car with a hard sail? Conquered the speed record.

Emirates Team New Zealand set a new land speed record using wind power last Sunday. The main condition of this competition, which lasts for more than a decade, is the absence of other moving parts of the car. Thus, the main driving force was a rigid sail.

The team and Glenn were able to develop 222.4 km / h. Now the guys are waiting for the ratification of their record. The entire team, including Glenn, raced in the America's Cup. They decided on such an adventure due to the fact that they did not have the opportunity to leave Australia due to COVID restrictions.

Glenn does not hide his joy, but he cannot hide his annoyance either - a car called Horonuku, in his opinion, is capable of more. He says: “Horonuku is able to develop speed an order of magnitude faster. And I will prove it when the team can choose the moment with stronger wind and conditions. The result is impressive in any case, but this is only the beginning.”

The land transport speed record without auxiliary propulsion remained unbroken for 13 years. It was installed by Richard Jenkins in 2009 on the same “land yacht”. Then Richard managed to develop a speed of 202.9 km / h.
In the meantime, the team and Glenn are waiting for confirmation of their record. We wish them good luck and fair wind - they will definitely need it for a new future record.
