In this news digest, we will talk about interesting innovations in yachting technology - new mobile batteries, an electric buoy and an electric propulsion system!
BOS battery S: new mobile lithium batteries from BOS AG
Lithium (and derivatives) batteries are not just in trend now - the whole planet is now using such batteries. Smartphones, laptops, power banks and more contain lithium batteries. This trend is ubiquitous and affects yachting as well.
On the one hand, the use of lithium batteries guarantees reliability and durability. On the other hand, the production of such batteries is a rather laborious and very unsafe process for nature.
BOS AG (Germany) is at the forefront of lithium battery companies. According to the company itself, their new product BOS Battery S will not only help save energy longer, but will help save the environment thanks to a new production system.
BOS Battery S is a lithium iron phosphate battery that can be used as a stationary or mobile power source. Batteries can be combined into blocks. Each block can consist of 2, 4 or 6 batteries. Interestingly, in theory, up to 120 batteries can be combined into one unit. The output power can be 12, 24, 36 or even 48 volts.
In principle, such a system will be universal not only on a boat, but also on land. The weight of the battery is 9.5 kg. BOS Battery S is rated for 3000 charge cycles. This does not mean that after 3000 charges your battery will stop working - it will continue to work, but with a residual capacity of 80%.
Here the company offers a choice. You can either continue using the battery or return it to the company. In the second option, the battery will be sent to medical facilities, developing countries, schools or small towns. At a minimum, in this embodiment, you do not have to worry about disposing of such a battery.
MagBuoy - smart electric buoy
Are you a fan of buoy mooring? Well, then you have another reason to rejoice. Magonis has found an interesting solution for the use of buoys.
The official world premiere of the MagBuoy device will take place at Boot Düsseldorf next January. Interestingly, the company decided to stir up interest in its new products and made a small teaser of new equipment.
According to the company, MagBuoy can be used to charge electric tenders and recharge yachts of all types and sizes (with the exception of superyachts). The buoy will be equipped with a built-in battery. The buoy itself will be powered and recharged through a reliable underwater cable, which will be permanently connected to the power system of the marina or the city. To charge the equipment of the boats, just go to the buoy and connect a special cable.
The company claims that the installation of such a buoy will not cause problems. Moreover, after installing MagBuoy, it will help to improve the infrastructure of the marina or port.
In addition to the buoy, Magonis will present two Wave e-550 boats. This is a five meter electric tender. The Wave e-550 models with a 30 kW MAG Power outboard motor will be on display at the show. The engine should give a maximum speed of 22 knots. According to a press release from the company, on a single charge, the tender will be able to deliver 12 hours of operation at a cruising speed of three knots, while traveling 30 nautical miles. Charging the Wave e-550 should take about 2 hours.
The tender has a spacious cockpit with comfortable seating. The maximum boat is designed for 6 people. In the presence of an awning with solar panels, as well as a comfortable lounger for sunbathing. A flexible tent with solar panels will be able to generate up to 1 kWh of electricity.
ZeroJet - electric propulsion
Back to the news from METSTRADE 2022! Next in line is ZeroJet's electric propulsion system. Many call this type of propulsion jet.
This version of the unit is not the first - the second generation of the ZeroJet propulsor is equipped with a 14 kW DC motor and weighs only 20 kilograms! You can control such an installation using a classic steering wheel (as with a conventional engine). In addition, for convenience, there is an installation activity screen.
ZeroJet is powered by a 48 volt battery pack. Depending on the dimensions of the boat, two battery capacities are offered - 5 kW / h and 10 kW / h. The main direction the company is working on is the market of dinghies and light sailing and motor boats. Tenders with a rigid or semi-rigid hull are also taken into account. Dinghy brand OC for Offshore Cruising Tenders has developed 4 rigid carbon models equipped with ZeroJet.
