Outboard electric motors are becoming increasingly popular. Interparus will tell you about the 6 most interesting models of electric motors for boats and tenders in 2025.
Outboard electric motors have been on the market for years, but only relatively recently have they become something to reckon with. Previously, electric motors had two problems:
- batteries are too weak,
- batteries are too heavy.
These two features were enough for yachtsmen to give preference to traditional outboard ICE. However, times are changing - with the advent of lightweight lithium batteries, the problem of engine weight has disappeared, and the capacity of batteries has become sufficient for fairly long walks on the water. Now the choice between outboard electric motors and ICE is no longer so clear.
We have selected six of the best models of outboard electric motors that have already proven their effectiveness in real conditions.
Electric motors from Torqeedo
Torqeedo is a German manufacturer of electric boat motors. The company was founded in 2005 and has been producing high-quality electric products ever since. Torqeedo is also famous for its innovative solutions, which have created a reputation as a leading company in the electrification sector. Below are two interesting models.
Torqeedo Travel 603
Travel 603 is a smaller version of the older model 1103 (more on that below), presented in an updated and lightweight form factor. The Travel 603 model takes the place of the 503 (1.5 hp) and 1103C (3 hp) models.
The engine has an IP67 protection rating with full waterproofing, a magnetic emergency stop cord, and a built-in on-board computer. For additional information on the charge, range, and even identification of the electric motor on the map, you can pair the engine with an iOS or Android app.
| Weight | 11.3 kg |
| Battery weight | 4.2 kg |
| Comparable power | 2 hp |
| Battery capacity | 500 W/h |
| Max Speed | 4.4 mph |
Torquedo 1103
Torqeedo 1103 is a 1.1 kW electric motor. It is equipped with a removable battery and tiller. Among the advantages, it is worth highlighting the process of quick battery replacement with literally one hand. The motor has four placement options (in fact, four positions at different angles).
Long and short shaft versions are available. The clamps and mounting brackets are made of stainless steel, making the motor suitable for use in salt water. The Torqeedo 1103 has forward and reverse, but does not have a full 360-degree rotation, which may be a minus for some.
| Weight | 11.3 kg |
| Battery weight | 6 kg |
| Comparable power | 4 hp |
| Battery capacity | 915 Wh |
| Maximum speed (RIB/tender) | 4.4 / 6 mph |

ePropulsion Spirit 1.0 EVO
The Chinese company ePropulsion actively continues to conquer the market with its outboard electric motors. Looking at the design and functionality of the ePropulsion Spirit 1.0 EVO, one can’t help but think it’s similar to Torqeedo, but there are differences.
The ePropulsion battery has a higher capacity than the original Torqeedo, and still beats the latest version at 30%. Another handy feature is that the battery is floating, meaning it cannot be sunk. However, you will need two hands to install the battery, which reduces the ease of use. There are three motor shaft lengths to choose from. The motor can be rotated 360 degrees.
It is worth mentioning the display - it is there, it is functional, but nothing more. The screen displays data on operating time in large numbers, but there is no display of speed, range or GPS.
| Weight | 10.5 kg |
| Battery weight | 9 kg |
| Comparable power | 3 hp |
| Battery capacity | 1276 Wh |
| Maximum speed (tender) | 6 mph |
Mercury Avator 7.5e
Mercury Avator was an event in its time - the first outboard motor from an internal combustion engine manufacturer, namely Mercury Marine. The entire upper part of the electric motor folds upward, opening access to the battery.
The integrated display is bright and informative enough. It displays information about the charge, estimated power reserve, speed and power, as well as system notifications about errors, overheating, and the need for maintenance.
In terms of operating dynamics in real conditions, it is comparable to a 3.5 hp internal combustion engine. Owners note an instant response to gas without the slightest delay in control. At the same time, the Mercury Avator 7.5e is the heaviest outboard motor in the selection - the total weight of the engine and battery is as much as 24.3 kg.
| Weight | 16.7 kg |
| Battery weight | 7.6 kg |
| Comparable power | 3.5 hp |
| Battery capacity | 1 kW/h |
| Maximum speed (tender) | 6 mph |
Electric motors from Haswing
Haswing is a relatively new company and represents a Chinese brand focused on the boat segment. Today, Haswing offers a wide range of engines for every taste and color - from the simplest motors to remote-controlled engines.
Haswing Ultima 3
Haswing Ultima 3 is an outboard electric motor equivalent to a 3-horsepower gasoline motor. The battery capacity of this model is 600 Wh. One of the main advantages of Haswing Ultima 3 is the simple installation of the battery, which is simply inserted along special guide elements into the groove with contacts and does not require any special manipulations.
The unit uses stainless steel in all the right places and comes with an anode, making it saltwater-ready out of the box. The engine rotates 360 degrees and has a drop-down tiller for easy transport.
| Weight | 11 kg |
| Battery weight | 5 kg |
| Comparable power | 3 hp |
| Battery capacity | 600 W/h |
| Maximum speed (RIB) | 4 mph |
Haswing Protruar 5
The most powerful model in this selection, the Haswing Protruar 5 features a robust, well-thought-out design, with stainless steel clamps and fittings and an anode included. The tiller, like the younger model, is retractable.
The Haswing Protruar 5 is equivalent in power to a 5 hp internal combustion engine. However, although the engine has the 5-hp index, the “passport” power is 2.5 kW (≈ 3.4 hp). It is called “five” due to its high torque: at low revs, it pulls the boat as confidently as a 5 hp gasoline outboard. The motor is designed for 24 V - these are two 12-volt batteries in series. Connection to one 12-volt battery is impossible (or will lead to a sharp loss of power), so full operation is achieved only with a full 24-volt power supply.
| Weight | 14 kg |
| Battery weight | 16 Kg |
| Comparable power | 5 hp |
| Battery capacity | 1560 W/h |
