Rolls-Royce has announced a new partnership with Intel to help the engineering firm realize its mission of building fully autonomous ships.

As a first step towards this, Rolls-royce released its intelligent information system (IA) earlier this year, using AI-powered sensor fusion and decision making by processing data from lidar, radar, thermal cameras, HD cameras, satellite data and weather forecasts.

Now as part of his new deal with Intel, Rolls-Royce will use solid state drives 3D NAND companies to store data from this network and chips Xeon from Intel to process them. This data allows ships to be aware of their surroundings, improving safety by detecting objects several kilometers away, even in busy ports.

The system is currently being tested on several vessels, including a 165-meter passenger ferry in Japan. In this recent pilot mode, the IA system allowed airborne officers to locate nearby objects that they would not otherwise have seen in the dark.
