The Energy Observer is the first autonomous hydrogen vessel that produces hydrogen from seawater and does not emit greenhouse gases. The Energy Observer's six-year round-the-world expedition aims to find renewable energy solutions. The Ship of the Future is sponsored by Toyota Motor Europe, which has a long history of strong commitment to renewable energy.

Energy observer has been adapted to harness solar, wind and wave power, complementing its hydrogen technology, which includes an electrolyser that converts water into hydrogen and oxygen. Then, at 350-700 bar, the hydrogen is compressed and stored in eight tanks made of aluminum and carbon fiber, ready for use when needed. As a result, the vessel has a significant weight advantage (50% of displacement) over an exclusive battery storage solution.

Initially, Energy observer was 24.38 meters long, but has been quadrupled, and today it is 30.5 meters long and 12.80 meters wide. The all-white interior and lightweight furnishings on the inside add to the essence of this vessel.
Launched in 2017 in the city Saint-Malo, France, Energy observer began his mission to showcase green energy grids on a large scale. After exploring France in 2017, the vessel is currently continuing its exploration in the Mediterranean, sailing to Northern Europe in 2019, and in 2020 Energy observer aims to reach Tokyo during the Olympic Games.

Crew, led by an ocean racer and a merchant marine officer Victorien Herussardas well as researcher and documentary director Jerome Delafoss, will visit 50 countries and make 11 stops to meet those who are working on alternative solutions for obtaining cleaner energy, with minimal impact on our planet.
The other day, on July 6, the expedition arrived in Venice and will spend 10 days in the port. Crew Energy observer creates an interactive exhibition to showcase green technologies that anyone can see. During the entire expedition, a team of researchers will provide documentary content about concrete and reliable solutions around the world, as the main ambassador of France in order to achieve the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals.

20 years ago, the company Toyota was a pioneer in hydrogen technology. By focusing on hydrogen, they have made it work as a practical alternative to fuel, as proven by the ship in operation. The company found that hydrogen allows for “fast refueling, significant range of motion, and an excellent emission-free driving experience that helps drive vehicles such as Toyota Miraias well as buses, trucks and even forklifts. " And all this reflects promising prospects in solving one of the main problems of the 21st century!
