The Polish government approved a project for the construction of a sea channel across the Baltic Spit.
The new fairway will allow ships to enter the Polish port of Elblag, bypassing the territorial waters of Russia (Kaliningrad region).
At the moment, the port has a poor performance in comparison with other Polish ports. This year the cargo turnover will amount to only 150 thousand tons, and the passenger traffic - 11 thousand people. According to forecasts, the new channel will increase cargo turnover. It is expected that in the near future the cargo turnover in the port will grow several times up to 1.5 million tons.
According to preliminary estimates, the project is estimated at 200 million euros. The construction of the canal 1.5 km long and 5 meters deep is planned to start in 2018. Vessels with a draft of up to 4 meters, a width of 20 meters and a length of up to 100 meters will be able to pass through the canal. The end of the project is scheduled for 2021.
The Port Authority of Elblag also intends to organize the delivery of part of the cargo to the major ports of Poland (Gdansk and Gdynia).
"We want become, the so-called feeder port. Around the world, large seaports cooperate with a network of smaller ports nearby that are used to unload container ships. Our clients now, are Polish and German businesses. Ukrainians and Belarusians are also showing great interest in our port. They want to transport their goods through Elblag to Scandinavia. ", - said earlier the head of the Port Authority of Elblag Arkadiusz Zglinski.
