Fountaine Pajot continues to work on greening yachting. Interparus will tell you about the ODSea+ hybrid system, created for eco-friendly yachting!
A step towards a new standard of yachting
ODSea+ is a step towards a new standard of sustainable yachting. The new system combines modern hybrid propulsion technology with the ability to generate energy from renewable sources. The main goal: to give the owner an environmentally friendly and almost autonomous way to travel, without sacrificing comfort, range or safety.
The development was carried out entirely in-house at Fountaine Pajot by over 70 engineers. The decision to use in-house resources is notable because yacht manufacturers typically implement ready-made solutions from third-party companies into their vessels, which sometimes causes compatibility issues.
In the case of ODSea+, everything is designed and assembled turnkey right at the Fountaine Pajot shipyard. This ensures that the system is perfectly coordinated with all onboard control units and ensures maximum operating efficiency.
ODSea+ uses a combination of solar panels, wind turbines and hydroelectric generators (propellers that generate electricity while sailing). This means that the catamaran can receive energy both at anchor and while underway.
Technical features of ODSea+
Solar panels are built right into the catamaran's structure. Their shape and location are chosen so that they do not disturb the yacht's appearance, but at the same time provide stable power to all systems on board: from the refrigerator and navigation to lighting and air conditioning. The battery power depends on the model; the range of power is from 400 to 2000 W.
Schematic representation of the ODSea+ system
Hydroelectric generators with two propellers, installed under the stern, are capable of producing up to 1 kW per propeller at an average speed of about 8 knots. This is especially useful during long passages, when the catamaran goes on sails and practically does not consume battery power. The picture is completed by stern wind generators, which produce about 600 W, and around the clock, regardless of whether it is day or night.
Fountaine Pajot chose lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries for energy storage. They are renowned for their durability, heat resistance and reliable operation even in harsh marine conditions where humidity, vibration and temperature changes are common. Unlike some other lithium technologies, LFPs do not require complex liquid cooling systems, making them simpler, lighter and especially suitable for long-distance autonomous cruising where every detail of the design matters.
Features of ODSea+ operation and availability
The electric motors installed in the ODSea+ system are designed to provide maximum performance. If the battery charge is low or the wind is too strong, the system will still be able to maintain a safe cruising speed of at least 4 knots - this is important for maneuvers and passages in difficult conditions.
ODSea+ Central Management Console
The central console, also developed by Fountaine Pajot engineers, is responsible for managing all energy. It controls the production and consumption of energy on board. The interface is made as clear as possible, so that you can work with the system without technical training.
ODSea+ is available on five of the shipyard’s sailing models:
The system gives owners the opportunity to try full autonomy and confidently enter even hard-to-reach or protected areas where the use of traditional diesel generators is undesirable or prohibited. The technology allows anchoring for days and weeks without turning on fuel installations, which opens up a new level of self-sufficiency and care for the environment.
ODSea+ is also available on Dufour
Dufour also has hybrid configurations under the Fountaine Pajot/Dufour brand. In practice, ODSea+ is available on selected models in the range and is promoted in parallel with the Smart Electric program:
- Dufour 48. The 15-meter new model is available in the ODSea+ version: a hybrid installation with an electric motor of ~25 kW, a 400-volt LFP bank of 27 or 32 kW/h, a diesel generator of ~14 kW, hydro-generation from the propeller (about 1.5 kW on the move) and solar panels on the T-Top (about 1.3 kW). This set provides a quiet ride, battery recharging under sail and noticeable autonomy.
- Dufour 44At the 2025 events, ODSea+ was shown on the Dufour 44, with an emphasis on “quiet cruising”, integrated controls and increased autonomy.
Test drives have shown that Dufour's hybrid system with ODSea+ uses a 27 kW saildrive motor and a 14 kW genset powering a 400 V LFP circuit, confirming the brand's focus on high-voltage architecture to reduce currents and wiring weight.
The main energy sources are wind power, hydropower and solar panels.
Let's also not forget that Dufour is simultaneously promoting Smart Electric (a hybrid with a priority on renewable energy sources and on-the-go recuperation) on models like the Dufour 470/530. This is the same vector of electrification of the group, which includes ODSea+.
Such technologies change the idea of what a modern sailing cruise can be. If until recently autonomous sailing without the constant noise of a diesel engine seemed like a dream, now it is a reality for an increasing number of owners. ODSea+ does not just reduce fuel consumption, but creates a comfortable, quiet and environmentally friendly atmosphere on board, allowing you to enjoy the route and nature without compromise.
