An architect and yachtsman from Portugal who runs the blog Interesting Sailboats wrote a fascinating post about the Dragonfly 40 trimaran from the Düsseldorf boat show

Dragonfly 40: Irrational Love
Although there is very little information from the shipyard about the new yacht and the quality of the 3D drawings is not very attractive - the yacht looks amazing in the photos. New model, shipyard Dragonfly presented this year at the exhibition in Dusseldorf, and for me, she is already among the most interesting yachts ...
Even at 40 feet, interior spaces are small because Dragonfly does not compromise on performance. The main hull is narrow, but allows for a decent galley and a comfortable small saloon, even if the dimensions seem more compatible with a 34-foot rather than a 40-foot yacht.

The same can be said for the volumes of fresh water. With a 200 liter tank, I will never persuade my wife to take this boat on a trip. Although we use water more economically than other steam, 200 liters will be enough for us for a maximum of a week. And if you take a couple more friends with you, as sometimes happens, the cruise is halved. Good if you like to go to the marinas. And if you like to go where your eyes are looking, this will become a problem. A small water tank will reduce travel freedom and require careful planning.
Plus, a small living space, and even less storage space - that's the price of speed that will have to pay for the pleasure of sailing on this very fast yacht.

Have Dragonfly 40 there is a well-founded 60-liter tank for waste, but there will be a problem with transporting the dinghy, even if you fold it and take it in tow, it will greatly slow down the trimaran. On the other hand, as far as I know, even smaller models Dragonfly make long journeys, cross the Atlantic and walk on both sides of the ocean.
It all depends on how much you value speed. If I remember correctly, that Dragonflywho crossed the Atlantic on ARCwas surprisingly slow. Perhaps due to overload, as the multihulls are afraid of it.
Cruise at speed - that's what these yachts are about, and Dragonfly 40 predicted maximum speed of 24 knots! I have no doubt that if the yacht is not overloaded, then double-digit speed will be the norm.
Even the performance on sharp courses should be better than most multihulls, since a large retractable centerboard is hidden under the table in the cabin, which increases the draft from 0.7 to 1.9 m.

The entire yacht looks very well designed in terms of speed, from the shape of the center hull to the design of the outriggers. There are two options for weapons with different sail area. The first with an enlarged carbon mast and staysail, with a total sail area of 99 m².
The second option, with an area of 77 m², but on a yacht with a fixed bowsprit, on which two headsails can be installed: a genoa and code zero 80-65 m², or a gennaker with an area of 135-110 m². On a 5.5t trimaran - this will give you an idea of top speed if the sea is not rough.

Speaking of the available engines: one of them with a capacity of 40 liters. with., and the second - 80 liters. with.! If 40 liters. with. already more than enough for a 5.5 ton yacht, then 80 hp. with. will provide twice the speed, which is much better than any sail-motor boat of the same size. It is a pity that a 100-liter fuel tank would only allow relatively little autonomy in this case.
This is a yacht for passionate racers, which has one of the few rational features - the way of folding, transforming the trimaran 8.4 meters in width to 4 meters, plus its length increases in a curious way from 12.4 to 13.99 meters.
In this form Dragonfly will find a place in most marinas, and the cost of parking is comparable to the maintenance of a monohull. The same goes for winter storage.
The price of a standard yacht at the shipyard is 425,000 euros excluding taxes, and this is much more expensive than the 40-foot Hallberg Rassy. As it turns out, speed is more expensive than luxury!
