Boot Dusseldorf 2020 attracted a lot of people from all over the world, including writers. Among them was Paulo: a Portuguese architect, yachtsman and blogger. Small and fast: 7 most interesting cruisers of 2020
At the exhibition in Dusseldorf small yachts there were much fewer than the large ones, but still we managed to find some interesting specimens. Some of them cruisers or cruiser racers certified class A - they are able to cross the ocean. Others are class B and C - they are designed for weekend walks or travel along the coast.
I will make a reservation right away that this is an exclusively subjective choice. There were other wonderful yachts on the boat show, but those that will be discussed touched me to the core. Looking at such a yacht, I thought: “Wow! I wish I could walk on it! "
Among the small yachts of category B or C, there were two that I really liked for their beauty, price or performance: Speedlounger 8500 with a beautiful aluminum body and luxurious layout, and Tricat 20 - a small trailed trimaran with basic cruising equipment. It is far from luxury, but it guarantees a fun fast ride.
Speedlounger 8500 certified for category C (coastal sailing) with a higher side she will pull on B. The width of the yacht is 3.08 m, displacement is 2150 kg, of which 700 kg is ballast (33 % B / D). The maximum draft along the lower edge of the keel is 1.6 m, it can be reduced to 1.12 m.
The standard package includes:
- electric motor (or, optionally, diesel);
- manual toilet with a waste container or flush to the outside;
- small galley with electric ceramic hob;
- espresso coffee machine;
- luxurious interior and cockpit decoration, with cushions on all seats.
Speedlounger 8500 - 150,000 euros including taxes.
The price of this trimaran for camping is 50,000 euros with taxesbut the motor is not included. And yet, compared to Speedlounger this amount looks more reasonable.
Have Tricat 20 is included in the price "Cruise package" with smart retractable mini galley, camping gas stove and very basic cabins.
Weighing only 580 kg, the outriggers are folded for transport or stowage on a small dock in the marina. With a length of 5.99 m and a beam of 4.5 m, this is a cute fast little yacht.
Tricat 20 certified for category C, but they say (and I agree with this) that the legislation is more demanding for trimaran than for monohulls. Therefore, you can be sure that the yacht will cope perfectly with coastal conditions, except for bad weather.
Have Tricat there are trimarans and more, but the price of them rises sharply. For example, for Tricat 25 have to give about 90,000 euros including taxes.
Another interesting little sailboat - new Django 8S, this time class A. For it they used the same hull as for Django 7.7, only slightly lengthened and with a different cabin.
This is a small fast racing yacht that can handle 1-2 people, with a displacement of 2 tons and 660 kg of ballast in ballast keel (33 % B / D), 2.99 m wide and 2 m draft.
The small reinforced racer has enough speed and power - a worthy competitor for a new Dehler 30 OD... The yacht will be sold with a carbon mast and ready to race for 160,000 euros, including 20% VAT... In her program Fastnet, Transquadra, Caribbean 600 and many other regattas.
Old man Pogo 30 was also at the fair. Even if he “needs” a modern, rounded nose to look more stylish, he is still a very interesting sailboat.
One of 30 that offers a beautiful cruise interior. Have Pogo rather Spartan style, but it suits the yacht and perfectly complements it: this practical interior is pleasant to look at, it offers a lot of storage space and gives a lot of cruising potential.
Displacement Pogo 30 is 2800 kg, ballast - 1000 kg (40 % B / D). The yacht is delivered with a ballast keel (draft 1.99 m) or centerboard (draft 1.05–2.5 m). The length of the hull is 9.14 m, the width is 3.7 m.
With a ballast keel and an aluminum mast, its cost 140,000 euros, and with a carbon mast and a centerboard - 200,000 euros... Both amounts are already included 20 % VAT.
You might also want to consider the RM 1180, a very flamboyant yacht, a favorite of the Atlantic boaters. You will get great pleasure from sailing thanks to the ease of operation and high level of security.
J / 99
J / Boats also lit up at the exhibition with a new J / 99 racing line. This yacht will have a better interior than Django and J / 112e... Cruising racers are an endangered species, and J / 99 one of its best representatives. A very fast yacht with a classy and exquisitely high quality interior, suitable for cruising and regatta.
The hull length of this handsome racer is 9.94 m, width - 3.4 m. Displacement - 3800 kg with 1520 kg ballast (40 % B / D). The yacht has an L-shaped keel with a bulb, draft is 1.99 m.
Sorry, the designer J / Boat Alan Johnstone not this time changed the shape of the transom, which could maximize the moment of recovery in heavy heel. That is, to make the type of transom that we see on the Ker or on the new Italian riders.
Because of this, the yacht has an old-fashioned transom, which perhaps contributes to not very good performance compared to its two main competitors in ocean racing: JPK 10.30 and Sunfast 3300.
J / 99
This is less true in coastal races and races in light winds, where the yacht showed excellent performance, indeed the best. It will take a little time to determine how true the first impression of J / 99 and its competitors, as the yacht is new and has only had a few races.
The interior is good for a sports yacht, despite the spartan shade. Perfect for a sports cruise, and the price is low enough for J / Boat... It can be taken for about 150,000 eurosmaybe a little more. It should be remembered that the yachts of this company have a high resale value, and they can easily be sold on the secondary market, where yacht J you will not find it in the afternoon with fire.

J / 112E - that's another story. The shape of the transom does not affect its performance, but it does affect sales. Many sailors who like high performance yachts refuse J / 112Eas "don't consider her ass sexy." Sounds crazy, but trust me, it's true! This is how the transom destroys the deals.
Sexy ass or not, but J / 112E Is an unusual sailing yacht, elegantly beautiful, with a sophisticated shape and a great cruising interior, good design and cool finishes.
She is also very fast, and one gets the impression that the racer in this family is J / 112E, but not J / 99because it was she who won many victories. The results of the races are amazing: last year's victory at the ORC World Championship, the St. Petersburg-Havana regatta in 2018, and a victory in the IRC European overall championship.

Length J / 112E - 10.99 m, width - 3.6 m, displacement - 5125 kg, ballast - 1769 kg (35 % B / D). Draft is 2.10 m with an L-shaped keel with a bulb.
Made in France J / 112E with an aluminum mast costs about € 250,000 including 20% tax... With carbon rigging, it will cost about 280 000but with additional cruise options the cost can easily reach € 300,000.

Dehler 30 OD
At the exhibition Dehler 30 One Design regularly attracted crowds of people to his stand. The small yacht is beautiful with its narrow keel with a bulb, which gives a large draft of 2.2 m.
With a hull length of 9.14 m and a width of 3.28 m, everything is stretched towards the transom and it is narrower than it seems. For example, J / 99 with a smaller waterline (from 8.72 to 8.97) wider than Dehler 30 OD at 0.12 m.Displacement is 2800 kg (J / 99 - 3800) with ballast 940 kg and 34 % B / D (at J / 99 - 1520 kg and 40 % B / D). Have Dehler 30 draft is 21 cm larger and more effective keel, but I doubt that this is enough to cancel the difference between the ratio of ballast to displacement.
With regard to stability in relation to the shape of the hull, the transom design Dehler suggests a greater restoring moment, but due to the difference in width, the advantage is still on the side yachts J.

This is about the same as J / 99but it is really difficult to predict the cost of a ready-to-race boat, as prices for additional equipment have not yet been published.
