Yachting News Last Week: EBI Yacht Recycling Report, New Giant Catamaran, Viet Nam Marina and BMW Boat!
Study of the problem of recycling old boats
Just recently we talked about the problems of recycling old boats and the challenges facing the industry. Recently, the European Boating Industry (hereinafter referred to as EBI) introduced the so-called. roadmap for solving the pressing problem of recycling.
EBI conducted a recycling study. The main goal is to once again remind about the importance of solving the problem and offer solutions. EBI also calls 2030 the main Rubicon. It is by this time that a critical mass of waste will accumulate in Europe. This can be avoided by taking steps now.
In addition, the EBI study confirmed that there are currently about 6.5 million boats in the EU that are in landfills or are slowly decomposing under water. The length of most of these boats does not exceed 7.5 meters.
By 2030, more than 210,000 more boats will be out of service. The problem of their recycling is especially acute in France (where 1.1 million such yachts and boats are waiting for recycling), Sweden (700,000), Italy (600,000), Germany and the Netherlands (500,000 each).
The main problems of recycling are the harm to the environment and the profitability of this processing. However, without recycling, Europe runs the risk of entering the new decade with an even greater environmental problem.
At the moment, EBI offers several options for solving the problem:
- financing research in the field of recycling;
- the creation of a single European fund, the funds of which will be used for the disposal of boats;
- optimize ways to deliver broken boats to recycling stations;
- encourage and fund the use of sustainable materials for the construction of new boats.
In the meantime, 2030 is getting closer, and most of the industry chooses to ignore the problems and continue to churn out fiberglass boats.
The first international marina in Vietnam!
Last week, the first international marina in Vietnam, Ana Marina, was put into operation. So far, the marina has opened its berths for literally a year, because now work is in full swing to bring the pier. Now the marina serves visitors in a test mode.
The new tourist site is located in Nha Trang, a resort town in Khanh Hoa province. Now the marina accommodates 110 berths, after the first year of operation the number of places in the marina will increase to 220. Ana Marina can accommodate yachts from 10 to 100 meters long.
The new marina was designed taking into account the fact that yacht maintenance will also be carried out on the territory of the marina. In addition, it is planned to turn the marina from a simple marina into a part of a tourist infrastructure facility with a tight integration of all related attributes - a full-fledged fuel berth, conference rooms, gyms and playgrounds, a large entertainment and shopping center.
Such a serious bet on Ana Marina is not without reason - the marina has a really good geographical position. Thanks to the new marina, it is possible to link shipping between North and Southeast Asia. Ana Marina is also located at the crossroads of sea routes between Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, Singapore, the Philippines, Malaysia and the seaports of Vietnam.
By the way, this year the finish point of the ninth Hong Kong International Regatta will be located in Ana Marina.
BMW will conquer the market of motor boats
Apparently, the automotive giant has become crowded in the car market and now the company is joining yachting. But for now, BMW is just testing the waters. The German automaker has teamed up with German startup Tyde to develop a zero-emission motor yacht.
The new boat was named Icon. Its development began relatively recently, but from the very beginning, the novelty was carefully hidden from prying eyes. Now Icon is getting ready for its first public appearance at the Cannes Film Festival.
For now, the press has only a few key details that Tyde and BMW have shared with the public. The design, like all recent BMW automotive projects, is “futuristic”. Of the really interesting - the same “green” technologies will be used in the boat as in the car lines of the automaker.
According to publisher IBI: “Icon will be purposefully targeted at the upper class as the team believes the luxury sector is key to the decarbonization of the maritime industry.”
Remarkable fact: 2023 was not the debut year for BMW in the maritime industry. After the First World War, the company created a whole separate division for the production of engines for yachts and boats. Then the unit was called BMW Marine. In 1987, BMW Marine was sold to Mercury.
However, this did not stop BMW from trying to re-enter the industry. In the 2000s, the company launched the Yachtsport brand, which produced products for sailors and yachtsmen and even sponsored the America's Cup!
New giant 35m catamaran
McConaghy Boats recently unveiled the concept of its flagship, the 35m MC115. The shipyard is focused on the creation of yachts, multihulls and boats from composite materials, and the new flagship should be the quintessence of the company's previous developments.
The MC115 continues the tradition of the smaller, 30.5m MC100. Unlike its predecessor, the novelty will have a closed flybridge with a comfortable steering position, which is located closer to the main deck.
There is a lot of space on deck to relax - the Jacuzzi looks especially interesting. Closer to the stern is an outdoor dining area. In the bow of one of the floats is an imposing master cabin with pleasant natural light. In total, there are six cabins on board for 12 guests, but the owner can choose the layout himself.
With a length of 35 meters, the MC155 catamaran will have a beam of 12.5 meters and a draft of 1.8 meters. According to the assurances of the shipyard, the multihull will be able to reach speeds of 21 knots.
