30% all international waters will become nature reserves
Recently, the UN voted for the inclusion of 30% of international waters in nature reserves by 2030. The main idea is to protect waters that are home to endangered species.
Interestingly, it took almost ten years to create a document that would consolidate this initiative. The signing of this agreement could have failed at the last moment - fishing companies had a hand in this.
The creation of reserves in international waters will be gradual. Currently, only 1.2 percent of all the world's international waters are protected. In unprotected waters, people can catch an almost unlimited number of fish and thereby harm the biosphere. The International Union for Conservation of Nature has said that 10% marine species are now on the verge of extinction only because of overfishing. The second important reason for the extinction of species is climate change.
Dr. Robert Blasiak, who studies the ocean and is a scientist at Stockholm University, says the ocean is only a few percent explored so far but is already suffering at the hands of humanity.
The adoption of such a document is only the first serious step in restoring the biodiversity of the oceans. The next step will be serious and in-depth work on building logistics and functioning of protected areas.
Equally important will be the ratification of the document by the UN member states. Without this ratification, the document is simply powerless.

France allocates €23m to marina modernization plan
Just the other day, French Secretary of State for the Maritime Industry Herve Berville announced that the state will allocate 23 million euros (or 24.5 million US dollars) to finance the repair and modernization of a number of marinas and marinas throughout France.
It is noteworthy that the official made this statement during his visit to the marina in Courcelles-sur-Mer, in the north of Normandy. The main goal of the modernization seems to be to bring marinas to new quality standards and encourage marina owners to switch to alternative and renewable energy sources.
The Secretary of State says: “We want to build on what has already been done and move forward - towards an energy transition [to renewable sources] thanks to new projects. In addition, there is always a need for major repairs and modernization of old marinas.”
The state will choose in which marinas the money will be invested through the selection of candidates. Candidates can submit their proposals and marina development plan until April 15, 2023.
