Saffier SL 46 Med is a new product from the Dutch shipyard Saffier Yachts. Interparus will tell you about the first full-size cruiser from the shipyard, which previously dealt with daysailers.
Daysailers or day cruisers have their own special atmosphere and style. As Float.de rightly noted, a typical daysailer in the marina looks like a slender antelope among a herd of buffalo.
Once upon a time, this is what all the yachts from the Saffier Yachts shipyard looked like – a Dutch manufacturer of small but very stylish daysailers. However, everything changed with the announcement of a new model, which was called Saffier SL 46 and suddenly turned out to be the first full-size yacht of the shipyard.
Deck Saffier SL 46
The new product is a cruiser familiar to every yachtsman in a familiar form factor - a single-hull with a fixed two-meter keel. The bow is notable for its vertical bowsprit and equipment for an automatic staysail. In front of the roof of the wheelhouse, closer to the midship, there is a full-fledged hatch.
The profile of the cabin is somewhat reminiscent of the profile of a sports car, and the characteristic coloring of the first hull of the series seems to deliberately refer to classic Lamborghini and Ferrari cars - restrained lines and rich colors. The cockpit is quite large. Near the entrance to the salon, two comfortable sofas are installed on both sides, and almost immediately behind them are two steering wheels. A little further away, closer to the stern, there are two more L-shaped seats (sofas with a lifting part) for rest.
Judging by the renderings, there may be two winches on each side near the steering wheels, or, as in the version shown in the first photos, only two. Overall, the cockpit looks functional, but for some, the lack of a seat directly in front of the steering wheel may seem like a drawback.
Of the interesting features, I would like to highlight the removable part of the L-shaped sofas, which covers direct access to the aft bathing platform hidden in the transom. The platform is literally “one step above the water level,” which at least looks convenient.
Interior of Saffier SL 46
On the daysailers Saffier Yachts tried to combine compactness and convenience, which is an extremely difficult task for any yacht with modest dimensions. Now there is no need to choose between comfort and free space. Thus, the Saffier SL 46 has a pleasant saloon without differences in floor height. Unfortunately, they decided to fit the mast minimally into the overall interior, so for special connoisseurs of design, a through mast will be an eyesore.
On the left side there is a galley, and a little closer to the midship on the same side there is a sofa and a dining table. On the right side you can find another sofa for sleeping and relaxing. Right next to the entrance to the saloon on the right side there is a toilet.
One of the really interesting solutions is a small navigation table with a large monitor right above the sofa, which is located on the starboard side. At the stern there are two guest cabins with large beds. If desired, you can fit up to two people in the aft cabins.
The master cabin is located in the bow. A full double bed is located on a small "podium". In general, the layout of the master cabin raises several questions:
- How convenient will it be to climb onto the already not very low bed using these “side steps”?
- Is it really necessary to have a sink right in the center of the master cabin?
On the other hand, I would like to praise Saffier Yachts for the number of lockers and storage spaces; in the master cabin there is really somewhere to put things, which is very important for a yacht of any size.
Features of Saffier SL 46
In addition to the automatic staysail, the small cruiser can also surprise with the mainsail twisting into the boom. The Saffier SL 46 mast is made of carbon. To withstand significant loads from the keel and rigging, the hull is reinforced with a durable galvanized steel mesh.
For effective sound insulation, the engine bases are seamlessly integrated into the GRP hull base. The hull has six Arrow portholes, providing both aesthetics and good visibility with lighting. In addition, the boat is equipped with a fixed carbon bowsprit, designed for optimal performance with Code Zero or gennaker. The versatility of the hull is complemented by a folding transom, providing convenience and adaptability in various sailing conditions.
The Saffier SL 46 hull is constructed using advanced lamination technology. This includes isophthalic gelcoat and vinylester barrier resin. The hull is vacuum infused and is molded using Divinycell hardcore foam along its entire length, with the exception of the keel area, which is a reinforced continuous laminate construction.
The Saffier SL 46 also comes in two versions: the 46 Med and the 46 North. The former has more open-air cockpit space. The North version has a protected cockpit and additional storage space for a dinghy below deck. This article reviews the Med version, which is labeled by the manufacturer as a "warm water yacht."
