American billionaire Larry Connor intends to go on a submarine to the remains of the Titanic. Interparus will tell you why this idea is not as bad as it seems.
Less than a year has passed since the sinking of Titan, when news appeared about new plans to conquer the depths in the vicinity of the Titanic wreck. The American luxury real estate billionaire plans to go on a deep-sea voyage as early as 2026.
Larry Connor ordered a modified version of the Model 4000/2 submarine from Triton Submarines. Joining Connor on the journey will be Patrick Lahey, co-founder and CEO of Triton Submarines.
Patrick Lahey
Fun fact: Lahey was one of the people who tried his best to dissuade Stockton Rush and his crew from diving aboard Titan. In particular, Patrick tried to convince his friend Paul-Henri Norjolet not to participate in the dive. Unfortunately, Paul died.
Travel goals
Connor and Lahey are open about their desire to revive public interest not only in the Titanic, but in deep sea travel in general. The OceanGate Titan disaster significantly undermined public confidence in such expeditions, discouraging potential deep-sea explorers.
Unlike OceanGate, Triton Submarines has certified its submarines to all modern safety standards. Designed for deep Atlantic diving, the 4000/2 will undergo further testing before the real dive to the Titanic.
Larry Connor comments: "I want to show people around the world that the ocean, despite its extreme power and danger, remains wonderful and amazing." History shows that small submarines have repeatedly descended on the Titanic, but in the case of the private submarine OceanGate, safety precautions failed.
Model of a submarine that will conquer the ocean
On the Triton 4000/2 Abyssal Explorer, Larry Connor and Patrick Lahey will explore the dark depths of the Atlantic. This model is capable of diving to depths of up to 4,000 meters, which is 200 meters more than the depth at which the Titanic rests. The Triton 4000/2 is designed as a professional solution for deep sea diving.
The submarine is equipped with special wings that allow it to “hover” underwater, slowly descending to the bottom without activating the main engines. The wings are also equipped with canopies for illumination. When folded, the Triton 4000/2 has a streamlined shape that provides high maneuverability both when descending and when ascending.
The submarine is equipped with a dual electrical power system with an emergency subsystem. The main battery has a capacity of 40 kWh, and there are four main engines on board with a power of 5.5 kW each. The maximum speed is 3 knots, and the cruising range without recharging is 12 hours.
It is worth noting that the Triton 4000/2 looks much more reliable than the crashed one Titan. Triton Submarines has already proven its competence by successfully diving its submarines. For example, the Limiting Factor, launched in 2018, became the first commercially certified crewed submersible to reach the deepest point of the Atlantic, reaching a depth of 8,376 meters.
We sincerely hope for the success of Connor and Lahey's mission and wish them good luck. Our readers can learn more about the history of the legendary Titanic and the sinking of the Titan submarine at suggested link.
