Garmin unveils its new, compact and lightweight GPS satellite communicator with advanced messaging, tracking and security features
inReach Mini 2
American marine electronics manufacturer Garmin International Inc, based in Kansas, has released a new compact satellite communication device with two-way messaging and SOS functionality.

Called the inReach Mini 2, the device is capable of two-way text messaging, location tracking and weather updates when boats are out of cellular coverage. This was made possible through the use of the Iridium global satellite network.
In an emergency, the device can launch an interactive SOS message to the Garmin International Emergency Response Coordination Center (IERCC). The IERCC is a 24/7 professional emergency response coordination center.
Peculiarities
“When performance and reliability are needed most, the inReach Mini 2 will help boaters, anglers and sailors alike. With this small device, you can stay in touch with loved ones when they travel outside the range of a mobile phone,” says Garmin Vice President Dan Bartel. "With its compact size, reliable location features and long battery life, the inReach Mini 2 is an invaluable companion on any boating adventure."
The inReach Mini 2 is IPX72 waterproof. It can be paired with compatible marine electronics on board, including select Garmin chartplotters and quatix 7 series marine GPS smartwatches.

Device-to-device wireless connectivity allows users to remotely control the inReach Mini 2. This allows you to send and receive messages, start and stop boat tracking, and, in an emergency, trigger an SOS signal directly from your paired device.
In addition to the GPS satellite network, the device uses the GALILEO, QZSS and BeiDou satellite networks. This results in less satellite acquisition time and greater coverage in challenging environments.
Autonomy and equipment
The internal rechargeable lithium battery provides up to 14 days of operation in a standard 10-minute tracking mode. There is also a mode that allows you to work up to 30 days in advanced tracking mode with a 30-minute interval.

The compact unit is sold in a Marine Bundle and comes with a boat-friendly screw mount with power cable. The mount will allow you to place the device at the helm or in any other accessible place on board. The MSRP price is less than $450.
