Greece is the land of legends, wine and the cradle of modern civilization. We figure out what you need to visit without fail during a cruise in Greece!
Aegean and Cyclades
The Aegean Sea and the Cyclades archipelago are a great option for fairly experienced yachtsmen - sailing conditions here are not easy. However, travelers will be generously rewarded for the difficulties they have overcome. The Cyclades archipelago is one of the most interesting places in all of Greece.
The most popular islands are Mykonos, Santorini, Naxos, Paros, Ios and Delos. On the latter, according to legend, Apollo was born, and the island itself is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In addition, there is the island of Milos, where, according to legend, the goddess Venus was born!
Mykonos is a real pearl of the Aegean. At the height of the season, there are always a lot of people here, and among tourists, the island is considered something like the Spanish Ibiza. However, crowds of people will not be a problem, as there is always something to do here. Many local cultural attractions are worth the time spent on them.
Santorini is a volcanic island. Interestingly, its official name is Thira. Santorini is one of the most popular islands in the south of the Cyclades. By and large, the island of Thira is the remains of a volcanic caldera. There are many sunny beaches with sand of different colors and shades.
Northern Sporades
Sporades is an archipelago that includes the Northern, Southern and Eastern Sporades. Each of these groups has its own interesting places worth visiting. We will talk about the most interesting of them.
The Northern Sporades consist of the islands of Alonissos, Skopelos, Skyros and Skiathos. For lovers of a calm and peaceful solitude, the island of Alonissos is ideal. In addition to beautiful land landscapes, there is a whole marine park, which is under state protection. However, that doesn't mean you can't watch marine life!
On the island of Skopelos, fans of historical tourism will discover a Byzantine castle that is simply a must-see. Skyros has many deserted beaches and secluded coves - if you don't like the noisy crowds of the Cyclades, then this is the best choice for a holiday in the middle of nowhere!
Skiathos stands apart. Here you can enjoy wildlife in all its diversity. Pine forests, sandy beaches, picturesque villages - all this seems to have descended from the pages of ancient Greek legends.
Dodecanese Islands - Southern Sporades
The Dodecanese Islands can be in one gulp for a week, or you can stretch your cruise and get the most out of it! The legendary island of Rhodes will be a great start to the trip. It is the city of the same name, which is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
From here you can go to Tilos and Karpathos. Although this is one of the most windy islands in the Mediterranean, it is a great place to practice skills. Also worth noting are the Venetian castles on Kos, and the delicious Greek-Italian fusion cuisine in the town of Lakki on Leros.
Another interesting place is the island of Nisyros. It is an active breathing volcano. You can even go down into the crater!
Attica
Attica is the heart of Greece - Athens, the capital of the Greek state, is located here. The Acropolis of Athens is one of the must-see stops in Attica. Here you will find such legendary wonders of ancient architecture as the Parthenon, the Propylaea, the Erechtheion, the Temple of Athena.
Cape Sounion is also a must see. Here you can visit the temple of Poseidon - the ancient Greek god of the seas. The temple is located high above sea level on the rocks of the cape. The nearby bay will also impress you with its beauty. Diving enthusiasts should take a closer look at this region.
In general, there are many beautiful harbors on the Attica Peninsula. Among these is the port of Flisvos, which is located just 6 kilometers from the center of Athens. If you go to specific places, you should visit Olympic Marina, Agios Kosmas Marina and Alimos Marina.
Aegina is a beautiful island that perfectly represents the past and present of Greece. There is a Doric temple of Aphaia (5 BC), as well as amazing bays with azure waters. Nearby you can also find Marathon Beach, which is quite deserted even on the “hottest” days of the season.
The main advantage of yachting in Greece is the opportunity to sail both for beginners and experienced yachtsmen. There are regions with calmer winds and warmer waters that are ideal for beginner sailors. However, the Aegean and Saronic Seas are the choice of more experienced sailors who are up for the challenge.
