The summer season is already open, which means many are already packing for a yacht cruise. Interparus has compiled a checklist of the main things you should take with you.
The question “what to take with you on a yacht?” is one of the most frequently asked questions among yachtsmen. And this is understandable: you don’t want to forget something important in a hurry. If this is your first trip on board a boat, then you should be more careful about what and how you take with you. So, what should you have with you?
Personal documents
Explanations are unnecessary. And although the fact of having documents seems to be mandatory, there are often cases when people leave passports or identity cards at home. Double-check that you have all the necessary documents, including your passport, visa, driver's license (if you plan to drive) and any other required document.
If you have a pet traveling with you, do not forget to take its documents. We also remind you that some countries require a special biometric chip in the dog.
Documents for a yacht or boat
If you are taking out a yacht charter, be sure to make copies of all documents confirming the rental of the boat. Also remember to bring your skipper's license with you. We talked about why this is important in this article. If you have a hired skipper on board, make sure he has the appropriate license.
Finance
Although you can pay by debit or credit card in most European countries, it is advisable to carry enough cash to cover unexpected and unexpected expenses. Divide your budget: keep some in your local currency and some in major world currencies.
Let's pack our things for the yacht!
Many beginners take large, hard suitcases with them on a yacht. It would seem like an excellent storage for things. However, not everything is so simple - in a small cabin a suitcase will take up too much useful space.
On small sailing and motor yachts, empty luggage is traditionally stowed under the bed to save space. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to pack a hard suitcase this way. To save time and hassle, use a soft duffle bag that can easily be stowed under your bunk. They come in different sizes and colors, which allows you to choose the best option.
Yachting clothing
An entire scientific and practical work could be devoted to this topic. Based on our yachting experience, we recommend focusing on this small list of basic clothing items:
- sunglasses
- headdress (cap or Panama)
- UV protection T-shirt
- a set of swimsuits for women and swimming trunks for men
- comfortable loose-fitting shirt made from natural materials (linen, cotton)
Even if your vacation involves being in a warm region, do not neglect a set of warm clothes. Weather at sea is unpredictable and can change at any time. Therefore, in addition to the above items, we also recommend taking with you:
- sweatshirt
- warm socks
- warm base layer (eg merino wool)
- waterproof pants
- windbreaker or waterproof jacket.

Yacht shoes
When traveling on a yacht, it is recommended to take at least two pairs of shoes. Use one pair exclusively on board - this will prevent damage to the deck from stones that could get stuck in the tread after a walk around the marina. The second pair is for landfalls.
Choose shoes with non-staining soles. Sneakers, boots, slip-ons and moccasins should be comfortable and durable to not only protect the deck, but also keep your ankle comfortable and safe.
Additional equipment for yacht cruising
The choice of equipment depends on your preferred style of cruising. In any case, it is recommended to have a power bank with a capacity of 20,000 mAh, which will provide four to five full charges of the smartphone.
An excellent choice would be a power bank with a solar battery, which will allow you to stay charged longer if the on-board battery fails. Be sure to bring headlamps and sports gloves to protect your hands while operating the boat. It's a good idea to have clothespins and towels, just in case.
Boat first aid kit
If you regularly take any medications, be sure to take them with you. Also notify all crew members of the location of your personal first aid kit for easy access if necessary. There should be a basic emergency kit on board with bandages, disinfectants, etc.
However, we strongly recommend that you stock your personal first aid kit with medications for:
- nausea
- diarrhea
- constipation
- allergies
- additional bandage
- ointments for joint injuries.
Don't forget sunscreen with high UV protection. If the skin is still burned, use Panthenol or another healing agent. It is also important to have insect and vermin repellent.
