The Volvo Ocean Race has unveiled a series of sweeping changes that will create the most challenging challenge in professional sailing and reinforce the 44-year history of the race for professional sailors, team owners, sponsors, race partners and host cities.

Highlights include choosing a new 60ft One Design Ocean Class Racing Monohulldesigned by a French architect Guillaume Verdier... The design feature of this model is that after participating in the race, it can be converted without unnecessary effort for class competition IMOCA 60, or single races.

The second important point Is the introduction of a complex 32-foot "flying" catamaran One Design for in-port race... At the same time, the status of port races in the competition will increase compared to previous years, but the ocean stages of the race will still remain the key to winning the Volvo Ocean Race.
This means that winning races in the future will require tremendous experience on the part of the crew, both in ocean races on a monohull yacht and in in-port races on multihull yachts. The new models will be available for rent to help reduce participation costs for teams.
The increase in additional support provided by race organizers suggests that the company Volvo ready to make significant investments in the event.
Other changes were announced as well:
- Ecology has become one of the main focuses of the new program. Partnership Volvo Ocean Race with campaign Clean Seas from the United Nationsas well as strengthening cooperation with 11th Hour Racing and AkzoNobelwill greatly enhance the positioning of the race in the future. The goal is to further reduce and eliminate the use of fossil fuels, to develop new methods of building and operating boats, and to reduce the use of plastic.
- Racing activity will become annual, without long breaks. This entailed the launch of a three-stage tender for the host cities, with new options for routes and parking formats.
- Volvo Ocean Race in partnership with the International Sailing Federation World sailing, will facilitate cooperation between yachtsmen and sponsors, providing an opportunity for professional training in new Volvo Ocean Race Academies.
- Global Team Challenge programfocused on sponsors will be the centerpiece of a leadership development and team performance improvement program. Reuse of yachts Volvo Ocean 65 after the release of 2017-18, will give an understanding of the commercial benefits of the regatta for business.
20 years ago, the company Volvo Group announced the purchase of the regatta from Whitbread, and since then has consistently provided comprehensive support for the project, and follows innovation for sustainable development.
The next Volvo Ocean Race will start in Alicante on October 22, 2017, its participants will visit 12 cities on 6 continents, having covered more than 46 thousand nautical miles and will finish at the end of June 2018 in The Hague.
