A sailor without a personal sea knife is not a sailor. Interparus will tell you about five modern models of yacht knives for all occasions.
In April 2024 we talked about yacht multitools – useful tools that combine several devices. In this article, we will consider some interesting models of knives that, unlike multi-tools, have only one blade and minimal functionality.
Gerber EZ-Out Rescue Knife
Gerber EZ-Out Rescue knife is a compact sailing knife for any situation. It has one working blade with a rounded tip. The knife is folding, so the manufacturer paid special attention to the locking mechanism so that the blade is securely fixed in the open and closed states.
The blade length is 7.8 cm, which makes the knife compact enough to carry in pockets, but large enough for any work. The blade has serrations for more efficient use. According to reviews, the knife copes equally effectively with fishing lines, ropes and even halyards.
The Gerber EZ-Out is also well balanced, which is essential for ease of use. Neither the handle nor the blade are too heavy, so the knife fits comfortably in the hand. The handle is made of heat-resistant plastic, and its texture is rough enough to ensure a secure grip on the skin of the hand or gloves.
Advantages: light weight (74 g), easy to open, reliable locking mechanism, powerful blade.
Flaws: The blade may be too coarse for some sailors.
Gerber River Shorty
Unlike the previous model from the same manufacturer, the River Shorty (literal translation of the name) does not have a folding design. The Gerber River Shorty is a one-piece compact knife with a small sheath to protect the blade. It is equally suitable for both hiking and yachting.
And although both sides of the blade are sharpened, the end of the blade is blunted for increased safety. The handle is ergonomic, there are several locking protrusions, due to which it becomes easier to hold the knife in your hands. Also on the handle there are two holes with which the knife can be attached to a strap.
The knife is small and is unlikely to be suitable for working with thick ropes and cables, but for everyday tasks the Gerber River Shorty is definitely unrivaled.
Advantages: Light weight, safe blade, durable handle, compact size.
Disadvantages: may be a bit short for some yachting tasks.
Gill Harness Emergency Cable Cutter
Unlike a full-fledged multi-functional yacht knife, the Gill Harness is a device for use in emergency situations. This S-shaped knife is useful in those moments when you need to quickly cut a cable, rope or any end that is under strong tension.
The device has two cutting surfaces - flat on top and jagged just below. The comfortable rubberized handle fits securely in the hand and will not slip even in the harshest sea conditions. According to tests, one precise strike is enough to cut the safety rope.
Advantages: light weight, comfortable handle, compact size.
Flaws: may be too small for some.
Gill Rescue Personal Knife
Another folding knife in our selection, the Gill Rescue Personal Knife is a universal solution for a yachtsman of any level and experience. The knife blade is made of stainless steel. The handle materials in different models of the line differ - there are completely aluminum ones, and there are also versions with a rubberized handle.
The blade length is 7.8 cm. The stainless steel blade is additionally coated with titanium for additional protection against corrosion. The blade is rounded at the end. The locking mechanism securely fixes the blade, but the knife can only be opened manually. There is an additional clip on the handle, thanks to which you can attach the knife to clothing or a backpack.
Advantages: light weight, titanium blade coating, compactness, variety of handles.
Disadvantages: Opening the knife in a critical situation can be difficult due to the locking mechanism, but the reliable fixation of the blade eliminates this problem.
Wichard Aquaterra
A small but very sharp knife for everyday tasks on board a yacht. It has a nice rounded shape and an ergonomic handle with a small hole for a lanyard. The blade also has a hole for easy opening of the knife. In addition to the smooth blade, the handle contains a bottle opener - an indispensable attribute of a pleasant cruise.
The blade is made of stainless steel. The locking mechanism, as in the case of the Gill Rescue Personal Knife, is manual. The knife is not so convenient for cutting ropes due to the flatness of the blade, but overall the knife is sharp enough to cut almost anything with the appropriate force. The blade length is 8 cm.
Advantages: the presence of a bottle opener, a stainless steel blade, the availability of several colors.
Disadvantages: may be a bit short for some tasks.
