How did the summer of 2023 affect yachting? Which countries were preferred by yachtsmen more than others? Interparus shares the results of the 2023 summer yachting season!
A new beginning
Over the past few years, the European yachting industry has experienced many shocks - COVID, quarantines, war in Ukraine, problems with equipment supplies. But as practice shows, after every fall there is a new peak.

At some point, yachting and charter became a unique opportunity to experience that very freedom under the conditions of covid restrictions. Like the shipyards, which are again operating almost according to the pre-Covid schedule and recording stable profits, the charter industry has also experienced various transformations.
And now, it’s 2023, and charter continues to be popular not only among avid yachtsmen, but also among novice sailors. Let's study in more detail the new trends and features of yachting that last summer brought us!
Price changes
In 2023, inflation continues to rise, which cannot but affect the yachting industry. Thus, the most noticeable change was the increase in prices for new yachts - by approximately 25-30%. Such a price jump could not remain without consequences. Due to the rise in the cost of yachts, prices in the rental and charter market have also increased.
Today, a charter costs significantly more than two years ago. The reasons are obvious: owners of charter yachts are increasingly faced with higher costs for maintaining yachts, which cannot but affect the final cost of the charter.

The only right decision that can save you money is to book a yacht in advance - and the sooner the better. By the way, booking will not only save you money, but also guarantee the availability of yachts.
In addition, the demand for yachts has not decreased at all. There is a steady flow of people wanting to rent a boat, and it is sometimes impossible to find free places. Again, you shouldn’t hope for free boards during the peak season. As for specific prices by region, Türkiye is ahead of the rest. The jump in prices for yacht rentals and places in marinas, starting in May 2023, was very noticeable.
What type of yachting is chosen more often?
Among the really interesting trends, I would like to highlight the growing demand for independent charters. The word “independent” means renting a yacht individually without a crew (called bareboat). About 57% yachtsmen rented yachts this way in 2023. Owners and charter firms say more and more boaters are looking for a unique solo sailing experience.

However, we also have the opposite side of charter - 29% yachting enthusiasts prefer a classic charter with a hired crew. Such an impressive percentage shows that many people prefer a carefree holiday under the patronage of a professional crew.
Another interesting statistic: in 2023, there will be a noticeable increase in interest in the so-called. “cabin charter”. 14% yachtsmen chose this type of charter, where you share a yacht with other yachtsmen. For comparison, in 2022, only 9% yachtsmen chose this type of holiday.
Monohull or catamaran?
The situation here is quite expected. Charter lovers generally prefer catamarans - 53% yachtsmen, and 44% enjoy the sea on board monohulls. Interestingly, the vast majority of charter yachts (regardless of the type of hull) are sailing ships. Motor yachts and catamarans account for about 5% of all rentals.

An interesting observation: if you go on a charter on a motor boat, then in the vast majority of cases the boat will be with a crew.
Have you ever wondered why many people love and prefer catamarans? If you still have questions, we recommend that you read this material, where we studied the issue in detail.
When and where are we going?
In 2023, experts noted a trend toward early bookings and route planning among yachtsmen. About 30% of all sailors book yachts at least six months before the start of the cruise. What does this mean?
These trends show that more and more boaters are looking to protect their financial investment on a voyage and also want to be sure that their cruise will go as smoothly as possible. In addition, prices at this period of time are lower than during the peak season, and if necessary, you can also cancel everything in advance.

What is worth remembering?
Before you go on a charter cruise, do not forget that insurance is required. In addition, do not forget to check the weather forecast for the expected flight dates in advance!
Among the directions in 2023, the leaders are (however, as always):
- Greece
- Croatia
- Italy
These are the top 3 countries for yachting in Europe. There are usually the most tourists and yachtsmen here during the high season, so if you intend to visit these countries, it is better to do it in the fall or spring.
