Automation and digitalization are the future of modern yachting. Interparus will tell you about one of the first “smart” marinas in Britain.
How automation came to yacht life
It is worth mentioning right away that at this stage we are talking about digitalization of the work of the marina itself. On the yachtsmen’s side, everything remains the same for now. At least for now.
There is such a company as MDL Marinas, the operator and owner of a network of marinas in Britain. It recently struck a deal with Falco and Havenstar. This was done to implement new technologies into its service system. The thing is that Falco and Havenstar are creating software and digitalization tools for the yachting industry.

The first pilot program was successfully tested at Queen Anne's Battery Marina in Plymouth. Thanks to the latest software, digitalization and surveillance systems, marina workers were able to automatically receive data on the movement of all yachts in the marina, as well as more accurate data on the availability or absence of free places.
How did this affect the life of the marina?
During the trial period, the marina team carefully studied the features of the system and how it could improve the user experience of each individual yachtsman. It turned out that the system is capable of monitoring the position and condition of each yacht at all 18 mooring positions.
Ultimately, clients began to receive more specific information about whether a particular place was free or not, and the entire flow of yachts became more organized. Tim Mayer, sales director at MDL Marinas, notes: “We no longer need to physically inspect each individual pontoon. Marina staff can now spend more time maintaining the berths or provide increased attention to each of our clients while mooring.”

The work of Queen Anne's Battery has become more coordinated and faster. Already now, yachtsmen can book a place in the marina in advance thanks to the online service. Unlike classic bookings by phone or through a website, in the case of Queen Anne's Battery, yachtsmen have specific and, most importantly, accurate information about the time when the place will be available.
What's next?
Experts note that more and more marinas are digitalizing. Today, berth rentals are increasingly beginning to resemble services like Airbnb or even Uber. However, this level is still far away. It is possible that soon the use of marinas will indeed become easier and faster than ever.

MDL Marinas reports that more than 20% boaters are already making marina reservations exclusively online. And the number of such clients continues to grow. In the near future, “smart” marina management systems will become more and more popular.
