“Don't make me a wolf in sheep's clothing. Build me a beast "
The spirit of personality: the sloop Ngoni by Royal Huisman
This is how one of the most cited inquiries from an owner, of all time, emerged in the yacht industry. And actually nothing to add, owner of a 58m / 190ft sloop Ngonibuilt at the shipyard Royal huisman, from the very beginning, very clearly stated his intentions.
Ngonidesigned by architects from Dubois Naval Architects together with interior designers from Rick Baker Ltd Is an absolutely luxurious and fast yacht. The result of a bold and minimalist design, crafted with impeccable build quality by professionals from Royal huisman.

Sleek, elegant, and well-executed yacht exterior hides under itself many innovative developments to solve the problems associated with the combination of huge, powerful and state-of-the-art weapons with a graceful and easily controlled hull.
"The owner wanted me to have a completely fresh perspective on the design of large yachts.", - the designer admits Ed Dubois... “He wanted me to go back to my roots in the late 1970s and 1980s when we were developing racing boats. But he was also aware that we had developed a range of high performance yachts that were nonetheless seaworthy and were considered comfortable cruisers. So I had to reboot my “internal computer” and think very seriously about how we can save weight and add power. This is how we came up with the idea of a reverse stem tilt. "
Reverse stem tiltwhich visually defines Ngoni, set the pace for creativity, but it soon became apparent that this idea was key to the structural rigidity of the hull, providing 12% more strength and load resistancethan normal curvature when using the same materials. The importance of this factor for the entire project cannot be overemphasized, given the complexity of building a strong, thin hull with numerous holes, but tough enough to carry a heavy load of enormous weapons.

"Imagine that a sloop is a bow and an arrow: a bow is a body, an arrow is a mast, and a bowstring is a fore-head and a backstay."- continues Dubois. You can imagine that the tension creates an indescribable bending moment, which is great if you can compensate for this with a strong, deep and wide body, but "The Beast" relatively low freeboard and shallow draft, and it also lacks a super superstructure. "
“Then you take, and make things worse by making holes in the deck for lockers and hatches - ballast that usually resists compression in the deck. You can overcome this by adding a shirstrek (the upper sash of the yacht's hull, adjacent to the main deck), and Ngoni there is a top plate made of solid 35mm aluminum sheet that acts like a ring beam around the body, although this is still a struggle with the required rigidity. "
“So, I started thinking about the reverse tilt of the stem, which is very similar to a bridge structure, where the road is designed in an arcuate line to resist the compression created by traffic loads. We ran a program to analyze this structure, and suddenly we got a 12 percent increase in stiffness for the same weight. This is what you sometimes see on high performance yachts such as Samuraibut this is the first time I have designed such a sailing yacht. "

Continuous teak deck planking with giant secret hatches, shelters a large tender, a davit, a spa pool, a sail locker and other technical space.
Towering carbon mast is one of the three largest solid spars in the world, all three were manufactured by Rondal... The total height of Ngoni from the waterline to the top of the mast is 75 meters / 247 feet and therefore exceeds the so-called level "Panamax".
Sail control provided by winches Harken and deck equipment complete with winches Rondal with electronically controlled variable speed feeders. These feeders are designed for high speed operation to ensure overall safety and reliability.
“The owner wanted the yacht to be fast without losing the cruise ship concept, which allowed me to think bigger and defy convention,” said Ed Dubois... “I remember when he first came to the office, I sketched the design, and he said, 'It's okay, but a little mundane.' “I went away and came up with that same reverse stem tilt as a solution, but worried that he might not like it. The next time we met in London, I showed him the design and he really liked it. "
Grotto area Ngoni is 853 m² / 9.182 ft² and is notable not only for its load-reducing halyard, but also for the innovations that allow the Square Top mainsail and its diagonal support rail to disconnect automatically and fit neatly into the boom, with minimal crew intervention. To further reduce weight and drag, continuous carbon shrouds are installed from deck to top mast.
Development of sailing equipment was a major project and its success is a tribute to the productive collaboration between Rondal (subsidiary of Royal huisman), sail manufacturers North sails and Carbo-Link, together with architects from Dubois Naval Architects, and the shipyard team.
Basic requirements for interior designers from the team Rick baker were pretty simple: "Don't design a traditional yacht interior!" The interior should have a clear purpose - for travel, thus, designers have complete creative freedom.
“The yacht is one whole, with the unique design of the architect Eda Dubois, - says the interior designer Rick Baker- and interiors should reflect the same style and modern design. Therefore, we deliberately avoided giving the yacht any particular stylistic theme, but preferred to make individual areas very individual. It was important for us not to let the boat turn into a hotel, and by all means to avoid monotony in the design of the cabins. "
Several steps down from the deck lead to the guest cockpit, an intimate and sheltered outdoor space for reading and relaxing. Deck superstructure with a canopy, together with an electric hood, it provides a comfortable atmosphere in all weather conditions.
On the starboard side is located bar and dining area, and on the port side informal rest zone, with sofas and coffee tables. Moving forward, the door gives access to the navigation station and stairs leading down to the crew area and engine room. The upper section of the retractable keel hull is located between these ladders, and thanks to the carefully thought-out design, its presence is not noticeable.
The living areas for the owner and guests are accessed via a curved staircase from the deck to the guest lobby. On the port side is located double guest cabin with a spacious bathroom, and on the starboard side there is a double guest cabin with a Japanese bath. In both cabins, only high quality exotic woods and marble were used for decoration.
Owner's cabin occupies the entire aft part Ngoni. The cabin is equipped with custom built furniture and a wide double door leads to a huge bathroom. There is also a spacious study with its own bathroom and a large gym with large ventilated windows in the sides.
Another feature of the yacht Ngoni Is an advanced audiovisual system that has been extensively tested for at least a year. The yacht owner, as in other matters, had very specific requirements regarding the configuration of the system. The point is that all users iPad could interact with custom settings embedded Tijssen Elektro based on engineering design Royal huisman... With 48 terabytes of memory from Kaleidescape and storage for 320 discs, guests have access to a huge media library.
