Life with a child (or children) on board is a little more complicated than it might seem at first glance. Because of the love of parents for the sea, children should not be deprived of the foundation of their future life - education.
Intermediate option for everyone
Yes, to begin with, let's make a note that the complete transfer of one's life on board a boat is a complex process that is shown only to the most avid yachtsmen. Life aboard a yacht is of course different from the life of a sailor aboard a tanker or container ship, but there are still some limitations.

For those who are not yet ready to completely move to the boat, there is the option of a “long vacation at sea” - take a family for six months or a year and go to warmer climes. This option is even preferable for families with children, because we are all human and a child may simply not like the sea and living conditions even on the coolest yacht.
In 2021, the van der Vliet family did just that - dad Misha, wife Linda and their three children (9, 11 and 12 years old). They went on a 24-meter catamaran to explore the Mediterranean and the Caribbean. The whole family spent the last year on board the catamaran.

The head of the family says that the biggest problem was studying. Parents wanted their children to keep up with the program, and COVID has only pushed education towards an online form. However, this was not enough, parents resorted to the help of tutors.
Angus Gibson, spokesman for Carfax Education, says: “Tutoring at sea has become much more common as people spend an order of magnitude more time with their families on yachts.” Ultimately, Carfax Education partnered with brokerage firm Burgess Yachts to also provide tutoring services at sea.
Tutor on board!
Judy and Mike Ryan went on a trip with their three daughters. Judy and Mike are responsible parents who care about the future of their children. They decided to take two tutors with them at once.
Of course, it is worth noting that the dimensions of the boat allowed us to take two teachers with us. The yacht of the Ryan couple has a length of almost 40 meters. Tutors International provided the couple with teachers. The next year, the girls had to take entrance exams, so the help of tutors was invaluable.

Judy says that there was no problem finding a place for classes on board - so that neither parents would disturb the children, nor tutors with children would disturb the parents. During the rest of the, let's say, non-working hours, the tutors went about their business.
John Gardener, one of the teachers on board the Ryan family boat, says: “The sequence and structure of the material and its presentation is extremely important. However, life on board a yacht makes its own adjustments, so training plans must be flexible. Many times in the middle of a lesson someone might spot dolphins and it is clear that everything needs to be put aside to look at these amazing marine mammals. However, as soon as the dolphins disappeared into the waves, we returned to our lessons.”
The concept of the approach to education on board a yacht is to give the child the freedom that yachting itself gives, but rather strictly monitor how the child perceives information. Visiting different parts of the world with your child will also benefit him - from an early age he will see other cultures, approaches to life and customs. At least it gives a comprehensive view of the world.

Judy Ryan says: “A year on board a yacht was a milestone in our lives. However, all three children have now successfully entered universities after preparing for exams on board. The eldest is in law school, the middle one is graduating, and the youngest is graduating in marine biology in Hawaii.”
A parent is also a kind of teacher
For some parents, self-education of their children has become even more preferable and reasonable than hiring a tutor. Naturally, this approach most often involves teaching more mundane things than in elementary and high school, but this approach also has the right to life.
The Ackles couple took their daughters with them to the 16-month Oyster World Rally 2022. Parents taught their children basic boating skills, understanding how the weather works, as well as practical life skills on board and on land. As Kate, the mother of the family, says, the rally gave her children “invaluable life experience, which we then supplemented with more traditional training.”

However, this option of study increases the responsibility to the parent. Kate shares that she "constantly felt the burden of responsibility for the education of her daughters." However, after the regatta, no major problems were found in girls with education.
