In 2017, a unique project for mapping the seabed Seabed 2030 was launched
Seafloor and ocean mapping data are critical information for biologists, tide specialists and Internet service providers.
Today we know the relief of the distant moon much better than the configuration of the nearby ocean floor.
The Seabed 2030 project, designed to change this situation, received a wide response from specialists. 133 supporters and partners joined the initiative.
In 2019. information about the bottom of almost 5.6 million square nautical miles was provided by the project partner GEBCO, which propelled it very significantly - at 6% from the moment of launch. For comparison, we can say that this figure is almost twice the area of Australia.
GEBCO leaders note that crowdsourced vessels equipped with innovative equipment, as well as robotic mapping ships will be involved in the continuation of the work.
The work will not be easy, since there is ahead - exploration of the hard-to-reach sea depths.
On the other hand, upon completion of the project, the information obtained will make it possible to halt the disappearance of populations of rare marine animals, in particular, fur seals, and will create new opportunities for underwater laying of Internet cables.
The effort and financial cost of Seabed 2030 will pay off as it helps protect the environment and brings many closer to the information they need.
