Yachtsman Jeff Holt sets off to conquer the shores of Britain. Interparus will tell the amazing story of a yachtsman whose entire body is paralyzed.
Jeff Holt's Story
Jeff Holt has spent the last 40 years in a wheelchair. In 1984, an accident left Jeff's lower limbs paralyzed. However, this seemingly tragic event did not become an obstacle for Jeff.
The man took up yachting and thus rediscovered the world. In 2007, he became the first disabled person in history to sail solo around Britain. This turned out to be not enough - and two years later he conquered the Atlantic.
Jeff is considered the first disabled person to cross the Atlantic Ocean on his own. In fact, besides him, there were two more on board - a nurse and a videographer. Holt's fellow travelers did not take part in steering the catamaran, so the championship in crossing the ocean was deservedly awarded to Jeff.
Interesting fact: Jeff Holt conquered the Atlantic three times before his last ocean crossing.
Another trip
It would seem that a person with disabilities has already reached the limit - not every healthy yachtsman would risk storming the ocean. However, in 2024, Jeff began another adventure.
This time Jeff will once again be sailing along the shores of his native Britain, but he has now also launched a fundraising program for his Wetwheels foundation. Another important goal that Holt and his team set for themselves is to collect samples of soil and microplastics on the Atlantic coasts for their further study and disposal.
Before leaving London, Geoff met with the press: “I'm looking forward to the next few weeks at sea, although I'm well aware of what awaits me. After 40 years in a wheelchair, I feel free from my problems at sea, I forget about my disability. I have dedicated much of my life to promoting the opportunities and benefits of yachting for people with disabilities and now I want my message to be heard throughout the UK.”
Wetwheels Foundation
The foundation was founded by Jeff Holt in 2011. The Wetwheels Foundation provides opportunities for people with disabilities of all ages and medical conditions to enjoy sailing and yachting. The foundation has eight branches across the UK.
The Wetwheels Foundation has already helped more than 12,000 people with disabilities get out to sea and spend time in nature. In the near future, the fund plans to purchase four more motor and sailing yachts.
With his journey, Holt wants to attract the attention of not only potential investors, but also people with disabilities. Jeff strives to show that disability is not a barrier and the sea is open to everyone.
