Volvo Penta and Fountaine Pajot have completed their joint electric catamaran project: it was unveiled to the public at the Cannes Yachting Festival last month.

There is so much talk now about everything Green... Needless to say, this is definitely the hottest topic these days. Of course, the maritime sector cannot stand aside, especially since yachting is very closely related to nature.
Volvo Penta Is one of the companies whose efforts to create a sustainable approach can be considered real. They are developing a complete electric powertrain, a hybrid setup, a network of fast charging stations at sea and more.
Fountaine pajot is one of the leading shipbuilders in France and a longtime customer Volvo Penta... Long before cooperation with Volvo Penta, the company has been committed to preserving the environment and each of the cruise line models is available in a ECO CONCEPT... Catamarans use renewable energy sources to minimize their ecological footprint without sacrificing performance and efficiency. Even motor yachts Fountaine pajot recognized as the most fuel efficient in the yachting industry.

One of their latest projects in which both companies participated is electric motor project for use on a sailing catamaran... And now this is reality, because Fountaine Pajot Lucia 40 was presented at the Cannes Yachting Festival with a new electric motor Volvo Penta with a saildrive.

The project is aimed not only at environmental friendliness, but also at increasing comfort on board, thanks to an almost silent mode, low vibration and silent mooring.
Volvo Penta and Fountaine Pajot take a “complete systems” approach, working closely with the shipyard's customers to understand how they are using their boats. The electric prototype is based on Fountaine Pajot's extensive catamaran use databasewhich accurately defines duty cycles for a wide range of user profiles.
The technology behind the electric saildrive is based on proven designs Volvo Group in the field of electromobility with many common components. The lithium-ion batteries drive the electric motor, which in turn drives the saildrive propeller. As is usual in power generation, this system delivers more power and torque at low speeds than a comparable diesel engine.

Onboard services, which include air conditioning, can be powered by the system's batteries, which means silent operation for up to 12 hours.
Depending on speed and weather conditions at sea, the technology can provide up to 4 hours (20 nautical miles at 5 knots) "Electric cruising" with zero emissionswhich is good when working in confined areas. Another scenario would be to use an electric saildrive to maneuver "in" and "out" of marinas.
Another feature is Volvo Penta 2 Electronic Vessel Control System (EVC2)which has been adapted for the Saildrive app. It is equipped with the latest Volvo Penta controls and a new interface that controls navigation and battery monitoring.
Electrical installation Fountaine Pajot Lucia 40 Consists of two 15 kW motors for an electrical range of approximately 27 nautical miles at 5 knots and 17 nautical miles at 6 knots. The maximum speed is 8 knots for a maximum of 1 hour. The network is equipped with 2 chargers of 5 kW each, 2 generator sets of 7.2 kW and 2 batteries of 20 kW each with a (declared) charging time of 3 hours.
