The question of the cost of a yacht is a very controversial topic for any yachtsman. Interparus will tell you how to buy a cheap yacht.
About cheapness and our attitude to prices
Beginners and not so beginners often ask themselves a clear and very human question: "How to buy a yacht, keeping your budget in order?" Many of these yachtsmen come to the idea of buying a yacht cheaper. Let's note right away: this is an excellent option for those who clearly understand what they want and are ready for the difficulties that may be encountered along the way.

The main idea is that the price of a yacht does not always reflect its quality. However, most often it happens like this: an inspired yachtsman buys a used yacht for a small amount, and then invests the same amount or even more in its modification and restoration. Therefore, it is important to find a balance between “cheapness” and the condition of the boat. This balance is different for everyone.
For some, a good option would be to buy a yacht that is worn out by time, with the possibility of restoring it gradually and at their own pleasure. For others, it is more important that the yacht is ready to go to sea immediately, in the “as is” condition. Everything is individual, and before opening another yacht sales website, it is important to define your expectations.
Remember: you will be the one operating and owning this yacht, which means any potential problems will also be yours.
How to find a cheap yacht?

The most likely way to successfully buy a cheap yacht is to buy a used model in working condition. The used yacht market is huge and diverse, so much so that it is easy to get lost on forums and websites. To save your time and nerves decide on a few key parameters in advance:
- your expectations from the boat;
- intended use (e.g. river cruises or short sea voyages);
- dimensions;
- case type.
The price is most affected by the size and current condition of the yacht. The smaller the boat, the more affordable its price will be. The secondary market offers many small daysailers that are quite capable of satisfying the desire to go sailing for most beginners.
Where to look for a cheap sailboat?
The question is rather rhetorical. The initial search can be done on thematic sites where people sell their used boats. Today, the number of online dealers is incomparably greater than ten years ago, and accordingly, the choice is wider. Another good option would be to visit the nearest yacht club. There will probably be a couple of owners there who want to sell their boats. Even if there is no suitable yacht, the yacht club is a place where you can get useful advice from experienced people who share their experience and are happy to tell you what to pay attention to.

The best option would be to look for a boat near your place of residence. A yacht is not a smartphone or a musical instrument: shipping, say, from the USA to Europe will cost a pretty penny. The closer the yacht is to you, the lower the transportation costs. However, it is important to consider several additional aspects:
- The road to the yacht. You may have to travel to a neighboring region, country, or state to inspect the boat. Such trips are not only time-consuming, but also cost money, even if the purchase does not take place.
- Yacht ferrying or delivery. If the purchase was successful, you will need to deliver the yacht home. You can entrust the ferrying to professionals, or arrange transportation by ferry, trailer or other means. Each of these options entails expenses, sometimes quite significant.
Additionally, keep in mind that importing a yacht into another country may require paying customs duties and completing the relevant paperwork. Also, don't forget that after purchase, the yacht will most likely require attention - at least minimal maintenance to prepare it for the new season.

In each case, the amount of expenses will be individual, and, alas, there is no universal solution. Therefore, the main rule is to carefully plan your budget, leaving a reserve for unforeseen expenses. The more conscious your approach, the fewer surprises you will encounter on the way to your dream of your own sailboat.
The psychological aspect of the issue
Buying a cheap yacht is always associated with compromises – both with your own wallet and with personal expectations. You dream of a 15-meter beauty with sails, but the budget dictates the choice in favor of a 10-meter cruiser. Wanted a catamaran? Reality offers a monohull. But this is not a problem, it is a natural part of a yachtsman's life. To avoid disappointment, it is important:
- Lower expectations. Don't put too much hope into things at first glance.
- Set clear criteria. Decide in advance which yacht will suit you and which one you are not ready to look at, even if it is free.
- Take a simpler approach to the process. After all, a yacht is about pleasure, not endless worries.
In practice, the latter turns out to be the most difficult. Disappointment at any stage of the search can ruin all the joy of such an important event as buying a yacht. Didn't find a suitable daysailer? That means a reliable cruiser is waiting for you somewhere nearby. Is your dream boat not available yet? A better option will appear over time. The main thing is to maintain a sober outlook and remember that a yacht should bring joy, and not burden the soul with thoughts: "Why did I even get involved in this?"

And don’t forget that chartering is always a great alternative to buying a yacht, whether it’s a cheap or expensive one. It frees you from being tied to one boat, opens up incredible opportunities for traveling around the world, and doesn’t require compromises in terms of quality. The financial flexibility of charters is another reason why many yachtsmen choose this path.
Buying a yacht is a journey where not only the result is important, but also the entire path to it.
