A skipper must have a wide range of skills to have a smooth cruise. Interparus will tell you how to expand your yachting knowledge.
Yachting is a great way to not only learn about the world and look into the depths of your own consciousness, but also an opportunity for personal growth. Every experienced sailor knows that the horizon of knowledge in yachting is wider and more complex the more you learn in the process of conquering the seas.
In order not to stand still and develop, it is necessary to approach yachting consciously. We present a small selection of tips on how not to stop on the path of yacht self-improvement and gain new knowledge.
The article is an adaptation of the material “From skipper to pro: take your yachting skills to the next level” by Denisa Nguenova for the Yachting.com website.
Refresher courses
Perhaps the most obvious option for literally growing in a technical context is to take advanced training courses. These courses can be very diverse and may not even be directly related to yachting. Anything related to safety, improving engineering skills, learning languages, etc. will open up new levels of understanding of life on board.
Constant development, not necessarily exponential, allows us, yachtsmen, to feel more confident at sea. Probably, more seasoned sea wolves will prefer courses and seminars on complex ocean crossings or deep tuning and modernization of the boat. Beginner yachtsmen should take a closer look at various courses for obtaining new certificates (more on this below) and classes dedicated to honing sailing skills and safety.
Professional skipper-mentor on board
There is no more effective way to gain knowledge than through a mentor. In the maritime business, this is especially important - and sailors working on the transport fleet will confirm this. So the next time you think that now, after a dozen cruises along the coast, you know everything about a yacht, it is high time to invite a professional skipper on your next trip.
The good thing about this approach to self-study is that you can get valuable tips, tricks and techniques first-hand from a skipper who has sailed thousands of nautical miles. However, the thirst for knowledge must be quenched by a true professional - pay attention to the experience of the mentor.
Entering more challenging waters and new sailing conditions
Sailing along the coast of Croatia, between the quiet islands of Greece or even through the picturesque canals of France is a great way to unwind, but the real fun lies off the beaten track. If you feel like the same old cruise destinations are holding you back, it’s time to explore new places.
A cruise to the Canary Islands across the ocean, the North Sea off the coast of Sweden, a forced march to Iceland are just a few examples of truly difficult routes, which, however, will allow you to truly feel the elements. After each such trip on a yacht, you will feel how your skipper level is growing. In addition, such cruises are not popular with all yachtsmen, so you will definitely have something to tell.
Obtaining new certificates
Getting new licenses is literally an opportunity to expand the boundaries of yachting. In order to get a higher level certificate, you usually need to undergo appropriate training (the same courses) and pass an exam under the supervision of an instructor.
Why is it good to get new yacht certificates? Firstly, certificates and licenses are notarized confirmation of your skills. Secondly, new opportunities open up - a skipper with a coastal sailing license does not have the right to go out to sea further than 20 miles. Thirdly, these documents can be considered insurance against problems with the law. It is especially important to have the appropriate documents when renting a yacht.
Discover the world of catamarans and other types of yachts
If you have preferred single-hull yachts up to this point, now is the time to try something new – for example, a catamaran or even a trimaran. This will be especially easy if you prefer charter: in terms of boat rental, you can try out a wide range of yachts of different sizes and hull types.
Traveling on different yachts will not only help you better determine your personal preferences, but will also give you an unforgettable experience. How does a spinnaker feel on a catamaran? Is a trimaran as stable as people say? Is a monohull really as maneuverable? Is it the space below deck or the performance? The answers to all these questions can only be found after you try different boats.
Reading is the foundation of foundations
And in the 21st century, reading is the basis of self-education. Yachting is no exception. Today, there is a huge amount of literature on the topic of yachting and cruises - from textbooks and comprehensive technical documentation to informational articles or personal memoirs of famous yachtsmen and racers.
The most important thing is that most of these materials are freely available thanks to the Internet. Therefore, it is worth getting into the habit of gaining knowledge not only from communication and videos, but also by independently reading books on the topic.
Participation in regattas
A leisurely cruise and a regatta are two different worlds. Participation in a race, like crossing the ocean, is a real test for any yachtsman. A regatta will not only help you discover new facets of your skipper skills, but will also reveal weak points that need reinforcement and improvement.
If for some reason you do not want to take part in a quasi-professional regatta, no problem! Today there are a large number of amateur league regattas, where you can sometimes meet completely green beginners. The main thing is desire.
Don't forget that many even semi-professional regattas are held in an atmosphere of friendly competition, so prize places are often nominal. Which cannot be said about some serious professional races, where there is competition at the level of NASCAR or Formula-1.
Another benefit of the regatta will be the opportunity to learn how to work as a team in a critical situation. By the way, did you know that many companies not related to yachting use regattas for team building?
Traveling as part of a flotilla
Even friendly regattas seem too exhausting? Well, then we have something to offer you - a trip in a flotilla (caravan) can be a great change from the usual cruises. There will be no competition, just you, a few other boats and a pleasant cruise at your own pace.
Gather a few crews, plan a route and set off on an adventure with the whole group. Can anything go wrong on such a cruise? Of course! But it will already be part of the overall story that can be told years later over a glass of wine.
Courses and lectures
In the section on advanced training courses, we talked in general terms about these courses - and most importantly, those courses do not necessarily have to be related to yachting. Now we will talk specifically about practical skills related to yachts, the sea and behavior on board.
Safety-related courses are especially useful. Man overboard (MOB) searches, signaling, checking life-saving equipment, and emergency response are all skills that require practice and support.
Survival and First Aid Courses
Survival and first aid courses are key safety elements that every boater should take. Fortunately, there are dozens of programs around the world that provide hands-on practice and skills training:
- practical use of a life raft;
- rescuing an unconscious person from water;
- suturing wounds and necessary first aid actions.
When you are a skipper and are responsible for the lives of your crew, these skills can make all the difference in a critical moment.
Master the technical side of yachting
A true yachtsman and sailor must know his boat inside and out. How well does your engine work? Does the chartplotter correctly use radar and GPS data? These and many other questions should become your guides into the amazing world of the technical side of yachting.
Gaining a working knowledge of how your boat works will make you feel much more confident at sea. One of the most useful skills a yachtsman can learn is basic repairs. How many problems on a yacht can be solved with just basic repairs? The exact answer is unknown, but experts know that there is nothing worse than being stranded at sea without the ability to, for example, contact land or a faulty latrine.
Thanks to the same Internet, there are a huge number of guides on the network on maintenance of both the yacht and its individual components - engines, rudders, rigging, winches, etc. Of course, understanding the technical side of the issue works best together with practice gained in real conditions.
