Spring opens a new yachting season! Interparus will share the good and bad of spring yachting, as well as how to enjoy this time to the fullest!
Yachting in the spring is a unique period that not everyone likes. But for those who value active recreation and great deals, spring is the ideal time to travel. Moreover, many yachtsmen are just beginning their preparations for the summer season, which allows them to avoid queues at marinas and crowds in popular places!
Lower prices for yachting
Just like other travel services, the price of boat rentals fluctuates depending on the season and demand for charter travel. If you like a charter, then the golden time to go on a cruise is the middle or end of spring and the beginning of autumn, when the influx of people is minimal and the weather is already favorable for sea adventures.
A spring charter has another unobvious advantage. Most yachts by this time have just completed their post-winter maintenance, which means that any possible problems have been addressed in advance. This increases your chances of hassle-free sailing without technical surprises.
Don't forget about the cost of travel to the cruise start point. This is especially true for air tickets - their prices in early and mid-spring are much more attractive than during the peak season. For car owners, the difference in fuel costs, unfortunately, is less noticeable in spring and summer.
Fewer tourists and yachtsmen
In summer, harbors, bays, and anchorages are crowded, regardless of proximity to popular tourist destinations. Enjoying yachting in such conditions becomes a difficult task, especially if you plan to explore coastal cities and local attractions. In spring, the problem with the influx of tourists and yachtsmen decreases.
Despite the fact that famous routes are always crowded, avoiding the crowds at the beginning of the season is a completely doable task. At this time, many tourist cities are just beginning to prepare for the season, providing a unique opportunity to spend time in peace and quiet.
The situation is similar with places in marinas: at the height of the season it can be difficult to find a free place for mooring. Some prudent yachtsmen make reservations six months before the planned vacation. To avoid the hustle and bustle and enjoy a more relaxed cruise, consider sailing in the spring or, alternatively, early fall.
Winds and excellent conditions for sailing
If tourism is a secondary matter for you, then we suggest paying attention to another reason to go to sea in the spring: excellent weather conditions for sailing. Of course, no one calls for going to conquer the Mediterranean Sea in early March, but by the end of April or beginning of May the weather will stabilize.
At this time of year, sailing connoisseurs will appreciate sailing under the favorable winds of the Mediterranean. Spring is a great time to enjoy a pleasant sailing with good weather conditions and stable winds.
Where are we going?
Are you still planning to travel on a yacht in the spring? Wonderful! Interparus can offer several interesting yachting destinations with pleasant climatic conditions for sailing or cruising!
Croatia
What is a yachting destination without mentioning Croatia? Having long captivated the minds and hearts of tourists and yachtsmen from all over the world, Croatia is an ideal place for cruises visiting historical monuments and cities, as well as for active sailing.
The southern part of the country is especially attractive, where the climate is warmer and more hospitable. We recommend the islands of Hvar, Brac or the city of Split as places to visit. It is in late spring that Croatia shows its true beauty. Summers here can be quite dry, so spring is the perfect time to discover this destination in a new light.
Ionian sea
The spring sea of Greece offers a unique chance to enjoy true maritime freedom thanks to its tranquility. At this time of year, the bays are virtually free of yachts and boats, providing ideal conditions for those seeking solitude. The islands of Corfu, Lefkada, Zakynthos, Kefalonia and Ithaca await travelers in the spring who want to enjoy peace and beauty.
From April, the water temperature in the Ionian Sea reaches a comfortable 20-25 °C, creating pleasant conditions for sailing. Spring weather in Greece with its warmth and hospitality will satisfy any yachtsman. For those interested in other destinations in Greece, we recommend that you read our article for additional information:
Corsica
Corsica is famous for its crowds of tourists during the high season. But true yachtsmen know that the real charm of the island opens in May. This is an ideal time to visit thanks to the pleasant weather, vibrant local color and excellent sailing conditions. Corsica in spring offers everything you need for a happy yacht trip.
The southern tip of the island is especially attractive due to its many secluded bays with sandy beaches - an ideal place for a relaxing holiday and yachting.
Italy
The optimal time to travel to Italy starts in April and ends by June. In March it is still too cold, and in June the influx of tourists will not allow you to enjoy your holiday. In addition, the weather in Italy is still pleasant during this period of time.
Italy is actually huge and rich in sights, cuisine and, of course, its history. For detailed route planning and selection of places worth visiting in Italy, we recommend that you read our special material on this topic:
Islands
Let's consider other popular island destinations for spring travel. The Balearic Islands, Canaries, Seychelles and French Polynesia offer excellent opportunities for yachting holidays during this period. Summer in the Balearics and Canaries can be too hot, but in spring there are ideal weather conditions without sweltering heat and overcrowding with tourists. The Seychelles and French Polynesia enjoy a consistently warm climate, offering a tropical paradise experience. However, please note that local marina infrastructure may differ from European standards.
What are the disadvantages of spring yachting?
Spring yachting, despite its obvious advantages, also has disadvantages that may come as a surprise to yachtsmen. One of the main problems is the closed tourist infrastructure in early spring. Restaurants, cafes and some other establishments that operate exclusively in season may not be available until the end of March or April. To avoid disappointment, it is better to find out in advance about the opening hours of the desired establishments.
Another drawback is the preparation of berths and marinas for the new season. After the winter break, it takes time to clean, update equipment and put the berths in order, especially in remote areas. This may mean that some marinas may not be able to provide full services, such as battery charging. Therefore, when planning a spring cruise, it is worth considering possible restrictions and preparing for them in advance.
Weather
Weather conditions in spring can vary greatly depending on the region. In European countries such as Croatia, temperatures in spring can be changeable: warm for a few days, around 20°C, and the very next day it can drop sharply to 5°C with the arrival of a cold wind. Such vagaries of weather require yachtsmen to be prepared and adapt to changes.
In tropical countries, spring weather is more stable and predictable. From the beginning of spring you can expect hot summer days with high humidity and refreshing breezes. This creates ideal sailing conditions, especially for those who prefer warm weather and want to avoid the instability of the European spring.
Required equipment
Given the changeability of spring weather, it is important to be well prepared for your yachting adventure. Here's a basic checklist of gear to pack:
- Waterproof clothing: Jacket and pants to protect against rain.
- Warm clothes for the night: pajamas and an extra layer for cold nights.
- Sleeping bag and warm blanket: will provide comfort and warmth while you sleep.
- Waterproof shoes: Rubber boots are essential in wet weather.
- Headlamp: Useful for illumination at night.
- Thermos: Keeps your drinks hot in cool weather.
- Sunscreen: Essential to protect against sunburn, even in spring.
Don't forget to also bring a warm layer of clothing in case of a cold snap. These items will help you adapt to any weather conditions and make your spring cruise more comfortable and enjoyable.
Boat selection criteria
Great, we decided on the direction, collected an additional set of things. Now you need to choose a boat! If you own your own boat, you probably know how to prepare it for the season. But if you prefer to charter a yacht, here are some tips for choosing the perfect charter boat:
- Heating: The need for a heater is undeniable, especially given the unpredictability of spring weather. Evenings can be cool and temperature changes can be frequent.
- Drinking Water Tank: It is important to choose a boat with an adequate supply of drinking water. Many marinas may not yet be ready for full service, so having water will make you feel more independent and comfortable.
- Electricity sources: It is also important to have an independent source of electricity, be it a generator or solar panels. This will add confidence on long journeys and help avoid surprises.
- Hull reliability: in spring weather conditions can vary greatly from calm to storm. A boat with a strong hull and good stability will help you feel confident in any situation.
When choosing a yacht for charter, consider these aspects to ensure that your trip is not only enjoyable, but also safe. We wish you pleasant cruises, full courses and seven feet under the keel. See you at sea!
