There are many cool yachts in the world - in this article we will talk about three such yachts: the classic Reliance, the iconic Cal40 and the racing Aquitaine Innovations
Reliance
Reliance was launched in 1903. Designed by Nat Herreshoff. For its time, Reliance has become something unusual. It stood out for its extreme design, non-standard engineering solutions. Herreshoff demonstrated the full power of human engineering.
Reliance was over 60 meters long. At the same time, the length of the waterline was only 27 meters. The displacement was 189 tons, and the area of cotton sails was an impressive 1500 m2! The entire yacht was made of wood.
It was the first yacht with winches below deck. Despite this, the crew of 64 people coped with sailing weapons. Reliance won the America's Cup by beating another legend, Shamrock III. Indeed, the beginning and middle of the 20th century is the era of extreme, but beautiful yachts.

Cal40
The Cal40 yacht has cult status in the United States. At one time, she became truly revolutionary in the 1960s and had the glory of a real racing cruiser. The Cal40 was designed by Bill Lapworth. The yacht has an interesting flat-bottomed hull and amazing sailing performance.
“The Cal40 has revolutionized yacht design,” says Stan Honey. Stan is an American professional offshore skipper and pilot. Steve is the owner of world records in sailing.
“All subsequent generations of ocean racing boats have had a similar keel and spade-shaped rudder. On Cal40 it was already in the mid-1960s! The boat has performed fantastically at Transpac, Bermuda Race, SORC and more. Even now, the Cal40 is amazingly competitive in racing. She handles well as a racing yacht, but is also ideal for a couple.
“One aspect of owning a Cal40 is that wherever you go, people come up to the boat and tell stories about how they raced the Cal40 and how they love this boat. They have friends and fans everywhere. It's like driving a 1965 Mustang, everyone has fond memories." The Cal40 changed the design of offshore sailboats forever as the '65 Mustang changed the design of cars."

Aquitaine Innovations

Aquitaine Innovations was one of the boats that accelerated the development of sailing. Aquitaine was created based on the ideas of Yves Parlier. Yves was and remains one of the sport's greatest innovators. Aquitaine was the first Open 60 yacht to feature a full cord carbon wing mast.
At Aquitaine Innovations, Yves won the Route du Cafe and Route D'Or regattas (New York-San Francisco, around Cape Horn). Yves also conquered the Route du Rhum regatta. To be fair, Yves spent the Route du Rhum as captain-mentor. Most of the time, Thomas Kovil was at the helm under the strict supervision of a mentor.
2000 was a challenging year for Aquitaine Innovations and its team. Yves participated in the Vendée Globe, but the mast broke in the Indian Ocean. Yves, without outside help, brought the yachts to the Kerguelen archipelago. He single-handedly repaired and erected the mast. Parlier ate algae - the food ran out a few weeks before the finish line. However, he managed to finish the race in 13th place.
The newest IMOCA class boats still use the same carbon wing mast as on Aquitaine Innovations with bottom struts. And this after more than 25 years!
