7 months after British sailor Pete Goss left Cherbourg aboard the Garcia Exploration 45, he recounts this first leg of his journey:
Pete Goss shares his impressions after 7 months aboard Garcia Exploration 45
"Garcia Exploration 45 by the name 'Pearl', named for our 30th anniversary celebration with wife Tracy, exceeded our expectations! She took us 7,600 nautical miles from Guernsey to the Canary Islands, the Caribbean, the Bahamas and on the east coast of the United States to the Chesapeake Bay. We covered all this distance, sailing the yacht together.
It seems like seven years squeezed into those seven months. When asked about travel, it is difficult to know where to start telling. One of the strangest things to get used to is that this is not the end, now this is our life.
We had a lot of fun, and countless different experiences have tempered us into a strong, self-sufficient team. The most significant decision you will make when planning your trip is the boat you choose. We are convinced over and over again that "Pearl", our "Marine Land-Rover with BMW interior". It is easy to operate, safe and a wonderful home to live fully in. When we set out on the voyage, Tracy had only been on two night crossings, and yet here she is a happy ocean sailor with a hunger for more. After all the fun with careers and parenting, we can't say that liberation is all about leaving everything and going sailing.
It's not fair to ask what is best, but if you insist, then we have favorites all along the route. Dawn in the middle of the Atlantic. Tropical sunset with soft rays in the cockpit. Minke whales who want to make friends. The rocket launch that we saw near Cape Canaveral, Florida, where you feel and hear incredible rending power. Extraordinary people we've met. Bahamas, where the water is so clear that the boat seems to float above the water. Dive into a cloud of tropical fish instead of a morning shower. Children who join the journey of our whole life.
Once our daughter took Tracy aside to say that now she understands what we are doing and why, and is very proud of us. The world of adventure beckons us and we can't wait to experience everything! "
