Servane Escoffier has long dreamed of traveling around the world!
Portrait
This fragile 26-year-old has already achieved a lot in sailing! Since childhood, Servan has been in love with sailing boats. The girl inherited this passion from her father, who devoted his whole life to sailing. Together with him in 2003, Servan participates in the race Transat Jacques Vabre... She has 12 years of navigation under her belt. From now on, skipper is her profession. Her vocation.
While studying at the Graduate School of Commerce in La Rochelle, Servan undergoes internships under the guidance of experienced sailors, in particular, in England with Helen MacArthur and Mark Turner at Challenges. By the way, it is on the monohull Helen MacArthur (on which Helen participated in the Vendee Globe) that Servan makes his first trip around the world!
Istanbul Cup
Servan Escoffier I looked forward to participating in Cap Istanbul, consisting of 4 stages. This is the first time she will sail this far in the Mediterranean. Servan dreamed of seeing Istanbul and the waters of the Bosphorus.
On March 25, 2007, the first stage began and the young female skipper hit the road in her Figaro Brossard. But after the second hour of the race, the failure. Servan collides with a "competitor" and seriously injures his shoulder. Dreams of victory melt like snow. She is forced to stop the race.
But it turned out not all that bad, and Servan is going to continue the race at the next stage.
At the same time, preparations are underway for the Barcelona WorldRace round-the-world race. The plans of its organizers - Ellen MacArthur and Mark Turner - were the participation of Servan Escoffier. As for Servan herself, she is not yet sure of her participation in this round-the-world voyage without a single call to the harbor. because of her participation in Cap Istanbul, but after thinking well, Servan decided that this opportunity should not be missed. Moreover, she always dreamed of a round-the-world race.
Having made the final decision to participate in the project of Ellen and Mark, Servan ceded her place at Figaro Brossard. She was replaced at the helm by Thierry Chabani, who became the winner of Cap Istanbul 2007 (by the way, he won the same race a year ago).
Ellen McArthur was confident in her charge, her professionalism and her motivation. During the time spent under one sail (during Servan's internship), Ellen managed to appreciate the talent and abilities of a young girl as a navigator.
Barcelona World Race
On November 11, 2007, Servan Escoffier and Albert Barge began their round-the-world tour on the Education sin fronteras boat.
In his diary, Servan writes that the first night of the voyage was amazing. The Mediterranean was calm, it was raining stars. We could hardly sleep, but felt the rhythm of the race. Courage and a sense of adventure appeared!
On the fourth day of the race at 20 knots, we found a small diesel leak in the right tank. It took several hours to "clean up". “Fuel serves us to charge the battery,” Servan writes in his diary.
On the seventh day, the crew says goodbye to the Mediterranean and enters the Atlantic Ocean ...
The days began to fly by quickly. Every day is filled with impressions, emotions, but there are also enough difficulties ...
Three and a half months on board without entering the harbor ...
The finish!
At 7 hours 55 minutes and 2 seconds (French time), after 108 days 18 hours 55 minutes and 2 seconds of swimming Education sin fronteras crosses the "finish line"! During these 3 and a half months, Servan and his partner covered 51 thousand 656 km.
Overwhelmed with happiness after her first voyage around the world, Servan Escafier entered the Catalan city with shining eyes! At the pier, she was greeted by her family and many friends from all over France!
The success at the Barcelona World Race made the young "skirted skipper" want to repeat the round-the-world tour, but on his own.
Interview with Servan Escoffier after the Barcelona World Race
What are you feeling now?
Servan Escoffier: I'm incredibly happy! I have just completed my first circumnavigation of the world! I still cannot believe that I spent 108 (!) Days at sea. This wonderful page of my life! The goal has been achieved. I have a great desire to say thank you to everyone: my family, friends, my team and all those people who have supported me during these 3 and a half months!
How did you handle the Barcelona World Race?
Servan Escoffier: My hands were very cold. It was difficult to work on the bridge. Before the passage of Cape Horn, our autopilot broke, and we had to stand at the helm for about two hours until Barcelona itself. Fortunately, Albert solved this problem.
While we were at sea, I really missed my family, and only her support helped me to overcome everything. I experienced great moments, and all the bad things have already been erased from my memory.
What wonderful moments have you experienced?
Servan Escoffier: First of all, this is the preparation for the Barcelona World Race with the whole team, as well as the start of the round-the-world trip on November 11! Also, I will never forget Cape Horn! He's great!
How was your collaboration with Albert?
Servan Escoffier: It's not easy to spend 108 days with someone you don't know, but Albert and I had a common goal: to complete the Barcelona WorldRace! There were very difficult moments, but we supported each other. I learned a lot from him. He has what I don’t have yet: experience and wisdom.
What are you going to do now?
Servan Escoffier: First of all, become a woman again! I would like to take a shower and put on a skirt! I would like to go to a beauty salon, to a hairdresser. I would like to go in for sports, go skiing, meet friends. In short, to feel all the delights of life again!
