Italian shipyard Perini Navi has launched many gorgeous custom yachts, including Tom Perkins' famous Maltese Falcon. The global crisis, exacerbated by the coronavirus pandemic, has put the shipyard in a rather difficult position. What will be next?

The Maltese Falcon is one of the most famous creations of Perini Navi
According to Superyacht agenciesSince 2010, Sanlorenzo has completed 103 superyacht projects, with an average of 10.3 units per year. The shipyard entered 2020 with orders for 24 deliveries - this year should be the most productive for it. Of course, there are some problems in connection with COVID-19, and the actual deliveries in fact turn out to be 25 % lower than those announced at the beginning of the year. Nevertheless, according to experts, by the end of 2020 Sanlorenzo will delight its customers with 18 new yachts.

Launch of a new yacht at the Sanlorenzo shipyard
Not everything is rosy at Perini navi: Only three deliveries are planned for 2020, and the same number for 2021. However, the strong brand heritage, excellent reputation for quality and key positions in the sailing yacht market still make the yard attractive to potential investors.
As you know, since 2017, Perini Navi came into the possession of the Tabacci family. The shipyard recently announced its intention to restructure its debt in order to "overcome the moment of significant financial stress and maintain the operational and business continuity of the company." According to representatives of the board of directors, the shipyard prioritizes current orders already under construction, and also tries to achieve the highest possible level of creditors' satisfaction.

For Sanlorenzo the acquisition of a controlling stake in Perini Navi will be an opportunity to expand the business and further strengthen its presence in the superyacht sector. Following the restructuring of the shipyard's debts, a new parent company is expected to be established, in which Sanlorenzo will control 70 % shares and provide € 30 million to finance operations. The Tabacci family will remain with 30 % shares and another 10 million euros for the development of the shipyard.
In late May, even before the official announcement, sources on both sides confirmed the deal had been made.
