Racing yachts are the quintessence of maritime technology. Interparus will tell you about the unusual boat Malizia-Seaexplorer, a real yacht car of our time.
Features of Malizia-Seaexplorer
Fans of the Route du Rhum and Vendée Globe regattas know about the IMOCA 60 class boats - fast and agile yachts that win prizes with enviable regularity. For the last ten years, at most class competitions, prizes have been occupied by boats of two manufacturers, namely VPLP and Verdier.

After the 2020 Vendée Globe, VPLP decided to improve the hull design of the IMOCA class boats. The first stage was to improve hydrofoils for the cold waters of the Atlantic, without losing controllability in the warm waters of the Indian Ocean. As a result, the hull of the future Malizia-Seaexplorer has acquired a more rounded shape compared to other boats in the class.
This approach, coupled with a general increase in hull volume, helped solve the problem of the boat's bow being excessively immersed in the water when sailing on foils. The hydrofoils were also optimized, which made it possible to increase the speed of the boat.

The boat's hull is made of lightweight carbon fiber and carbon fiber, making the Malizia lighter and more maneuverable than its class rivals.
Racing history of Malizia-Seaexplorer
After modifications were made to the original IMOCA class boat hull, the Malizia-Seaexplorer was born. The boat was ready for racing and set off to conquer racing peaks. In her first year on the water (2022), Malizia-Seaexplorer took a respectable third place at the Défi Azimut regatta, losing only to the Verdier teams.

The second race of the season was less successful. During the Route du Rhum, the Malizia-Seaexplorer's hydrofoils failed, forcing the crew to reduce speed. As a result, the boat finished in 24th place out of 38 competitors. However, the best achievements were yet to come.
Ocean Race and the legendary record
Ocean Race 2022-2023 has started successfully. An experienced crew was selected for the Malizia-Seaexplorer, including the engineers who designed the boat. The regatta proceeded at a brisk pace until the skipper and creator of the boat, Boris Herrmann, received a severe burn from boiling water. As a result, Herrmann had to temporarily withdraw from the second stage of the race to avoid infection.
In Herrmann's absence, co-skipper Rosalyn Kuiper suffered a severe concussion and a deep cut above her right eye after falling from her bunk. This resulted in the Malizia crew being the most injured in that race.

However, this did not stop the team from setting a world record in the fifth stage of the race. Malizia set a speed record for monohulls, covering 640.70 nautical miles in 24 hours of racing. Although this record remains unofficial, it does not lose its significance.
The problem with recognizing the record is that just a couple of hours earlier, the Holcim-PRB team also set a similar record. The World Speed Record Council said the difference was so small that it made no sense to single out the Malizia team separately.
Subsequent races
In 2023, the Malizia team returned to the Défi Azimut circuit, where they achieved seventh place out of 34. The Transat Jacques Vabre 2023 also brought Malizia seventh place. The Retour à la base race ended more successfully - fourth place in the overall standings.

Herrmann has already announced his plans to return to the Vendee Globe in 2024-2025. We will closely monitor the team's progress.
