Lady Anastasia and recent events
Taras Ostapchuk and several other Ukrainians worked on the yacht of the oligarch Alexander Mikheev - Lady Anastasia. Mikheev is vice president of the Russian state concern Rostec, which develops, manufactures and exports high-tech weapons.
After Taras saw the news from Ukraine about the shelling of residential buildings in Kyiv, the sailor decided to take revenge and sink the ship. Lady Anastasia was moored at Port Andriano in Mallorca.
Ostapchuk opened the ship's valves, which limited the access of water to the hold, and sank the yacht. The rest of the Ukrainians tried to talk him out of it, but Ostapchuk said he would take full responsibility. “The owner of this ship is a criminal who sells guns for a living. Now they are killing Ukrainians,” Taras Ostapchuk said after waiting for the police. After Ostapchuk voluntarily surrendered to the authorities, an investigation began.
During the trial, Taras, as a defense, showed footage of shelling in Kyiv, and also explained his motivation. The judge considered this a sufficient mitigating circumstance and released Ostapchuk from custody in the courtroom. Among other things, the judge did not charge Taras with damaging someone else's property.
